: Jersey Mike and the Grinners (10/9)
: Latimeria October 10, 2014, 07:32:48 AM
My buddy who I have not seen in 25 years was out visiting friends in San Fran when he said that he was going to fly down to San Diego and hoped to get out fishing with me for a little.  Well, that didn't take any arm twisting!  lol

I met him down at the little bay after work as he wanted to catch a leopard shark to get scratched off his fish wish list.  It didn't take long as we were catching up, the rod went BENDO!

Check a Kitty off the list for Jersey Mike!

Fishing was slow, but 25 years was a lot of time to catch up with.  Mike was on again!

We are used to these guys, but Mike was pretty stoked to get his first Horn Shark also!  Hell, I was stoked because we rarely get them back here in the bay!

He ended the evening with a bass to round out his trip.

He wanted to grab a bite to eat, so I took him to Rocky's and grabbed some cheese burgers and fries.  They have awesome burgers, but I don't think their A-Chef works on Thursday nights as they were up to my high standards for the usual fare, but a damn tasty burger none-the-less.

3 nights in a row of fishing and less than 4 hours of sleep each night.  I'm bushed...

-Until next tide!

Hell yea! Nice leo for sure.

Tom are you running the same setup for leopards in the bay as you would for bat rays? Or different?

I run a 3 oz sliding sinker directly above a hook with squid/macs and have no trouble catching bat rays...but I catch very few leopards in the bay compared to you. Obviously you are the master and the area I am fishing may be to blame...but it seems like i'm not catching as many leopard sharks. I'm thinking that I will have better chances with a 3 way swivel or carolina rig. Any suggestions? Might head out tomorrow night to target some...

Lately I've been doing better on the 3-way swivel for them.  I have some theories about it, but I definitely have gotten more leopard bites that way than using the cannonball rig.
The biggest thing is no steel leader in the bay.  Surf is one thing, but that is definitely a more noticeable difference when fishing for leo's in the bay.

If the tide is really slow, I will even just fly line a head out.  I've had great success that way on leo's for when there was no to little current.
