: 2018 "June" Shoreline Beast Bash
: Latimeria May 22, 2018, 06:06:31 AM
June 01, 2018 through June 30, 2018

I'm going to start looking for donated prizes and contact a few places to see if we could score something decent as prizes go.

This will be a contest in which there are multiple categories but in a descending order of importance as prizes go. (Prizes will be sorted as they come in.)

1) Sevengill/Soupfin and other major shark species
2) Leopard Sharks
3) Bat Rays
4) Surf Shark By-catch (Eels, Butterfly Rays, Shovelnose, bass, Smooth-hound, Horn shark, Octopus, Lobster)

Once prize packs are collected and sorted, it will be based on this order of typical surf/bay critters.

Rules

-No Second Place for each of the 4 categories, only the top dog in each category wins.

-a tape measure MUST be used and viewable in one of the pictures taken in any form to show you had a measuring device handy.

-a Clear picture showing the entire shark (and angler if possible)

-The Bycatch winner will be decided on by a member vote (poll) as we will let the people decide which by-catch is more rewarding than the others. (No Lures, Small Rods... only fish caught accidentally on bait on the LONG ROD while shark or ray fishing)  It goes without saying that if you use a small rod, that you are targeting what the big game gear is referring to bycatch.

-Only legal species you are allowed to target and catch, count.  A non-legal species like a BSB or any other protected species by the DFW rules

-Only "Posting" P-Soul members are eligible.  All fishing contests are competitions in which all members including moderators are eligible.
C-P-R ONLY!!!

-Shoreline based caught only.  Rod has to be affixed into a sand spike on the beach or bay shoreline.  No pier sharks/rays.

-Pictures are mandatory to be counted.

-Contest ends on Saturday June 30th, 2018 at 11:59p.m.

If anyone wants to donate or request donations from their local tackle shop, it would be greatly appreciated to speed up the process in starting this contest.
If any tackle shop or landing donates, I will advertise for them on the website free for month.

If there is anything that needs finer detail in explaining, I'll modify the rules to reflect it but it should be pretty straight forward.

Good Luck!

Sevengill/Soupfin and other major shark species

1) xjchad - 91" Sevengill

Leopard Sharks

1)  53.5" Treecatcher (Steven)

Bat Rays

1) 1morecast - 54"

Surf Shark By-catch

1) Terrafirma (Huge Bycatch)

I can donate some of the dehookers I've been making. Nothing fancy, but everyone going after sharks needs a safer way to pull the hook.

OK, The June Contest is here!!!!!

Couple of questions about -Shoreline based caught only.  Rod has to be affixed into a sand spike on the beach or bay shoreline.  No pier sharks/rays.

1. Does this mean yakked baits are allowed or is it hand cast only?

2. Does the sand spike have to actually be in sand? We have a spot that has a wooden deck and a rock retaining wall that run parallel to the water. You gain no casting or distance advantage fishing from them, getting to the sand is safe and easy, and you have to land the fish on the sand. We fish from those vantage points because it lets us get more of our lines out of the water/salad and makes it much easier for people walking along the beach to walk under the lines because it's a pretty narrow strip of beach. It's not like you're fishing from a rock jetty.

;D

So this basically would mean bait only, nothing caught on lures allowed?...unless your reteiving a swimbait while the rod is in a holder?

First off, that's a really nice surf ghost Joe! Congrats brother!

Secondly, rules are amended even though everyone knows what I mean by "Bycatch" .

No Lures, Small Rods... only fish caught accidentally on bait on the LONG ROD while shark or ray fishing.

Bycatch is referring to the smaller stuff on the long rod that you are not intending to catch or not looking to catch.  Using a small rod would not qualify that as Bycatch, but as targeted fish since you are scaling the gear back and using artificial lures to catch game fish (fin fish) rather than sharks or rays.

We've been trying boss, but it seems like you can only hand cast from shore for 10 to 15 minute intervals at low tide. Once the tide starts coming in, so do the kelp monsters. I've talked to a fair number of guys up and down the coast and it's been pretty much the same story.

That's really what I was figuring, but June is usually a really good month and things have been super slow.  The current and constant Southerly wind has not helped out either.

Keep at it Chip!

3 more weeks to go!

With the surf conditions this weekend, we're going to try for threshers from shore at a double top secret spot.

But realistically we're resigned to the fact that we're probably going to show up, take a look and head to the bay for a bait making and beer drinking trip ;D

Bring a tape and a camera.  This contest is a "Shoreline Based" contest, so catching a Leopard and bat ray might put you in the lead for 2 positions.

The shark board is a fishing trip for one on my boat (all gas and ice included). The bat ray and Leopard winners will be a grab bag of things that I need to sort out.  I know you and Mike offered some things up, but I still have some SWAG from earlier along with soft tape measures and stuff.  I didn't get out to rally the prize wagon like I hoped.  I'm just hoping the second half of 2018 treats me better than the first half of the year as it's been one thing after another.

The pelagics are starting to bite, so this is perfect timing for you (or the winner) of the shark list.  8)
