Thanks for the intel Len! Last time the soupies invaded LJ, I went on a big BSB and Yellowtail run.

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / 9-Mile Bank or Bust (9/25)
« on: September 26, 2020, 06:37:01 AM »
Weather forecast looked favorable.  small 2-3' swells at 10 second or more intervals.  Light westerly winds 10 knots or less....  You know why I'm starting with this, right???

Reality... Washing machine.  11-20knot winds from the SSW.  Absolutely soaked beat to hell by the time I got to the 9-mike, but hoping conditions would flatten out around 9:00 as what usually occurs as the forecast was still the same on the VHF all morning.

Overcast, and really bumpy so hard to find any kelp.  Water was absolutely beautiful, clean and warm at 72-73.  There gotta be dodo around!  Birds and Dolphin everywhere, but no signs of fish and no marks on the meter anywhere.  Water finally started flattening up and would troll around looking for kelp.  No bait, so I was going to have to do it the hard way.

First kelp was dryer than Death Valley.  Second Kelp didn't even have a kelp bug on the leaves. Third kelp, I just slung out a small 15g jig on the bass gear and got bumped, but missed it.  I finally get bumped again close to the boat and swung on it.  I watched my jig with a DFG stocker trout sized yellowtail come flying out of the water over my head and threw it like a trebuchet 20 yards behind me!  hahaha!  I get another one and it shakes off as i try to swing it on board.  These yellowtail couldn't have been more than 3/4 of a pound at most!  After I lost the second one, they scattered and that was it.

Lots of Brown Boobies flying around and diving on that small bait..  almost gave me flashbacks of that damn Gannet I caught last year.

I kept trolling for nothing, but it felt great to be at the 9-mile legit for the first time this year and I just kept scanning for life.  I found a number of paddies after that and they were loaded with small baits.  I caught a mackerel on one and almost had some blue perch.  Without any bait, it was hard to get them to hit the jig.

Finally I was getting close to calling it as the wind started to pick up again and I see a big military style boat running at me full bore!  WTF?!?
Well, it was a Coast Guard inspection...  Super nice people, but they were very similar to the last time when we got checked by the Mexican Navy.  One guy talked to me while the other six just stood and observed.  I gave them my info and knew they were all checking my boat because they saw some old pill bottles I was using as "dry storage" for batteries and lip balm tucked away that I can't believe they could even see it!  I opened it for them and they thanked me as they were on their way to grabbing another center console that flew on by.

Well that's about it.  I was hoping to find some bonito on the way in, but I couldn't believe how dead things were.  It was more miss for all the radio chatter, but I did hear a few boats get into some decent YFT fishing in the 30-40 pound class.  Oh well, a good "Search and See what I could See"  mission.

Thanks for reading!

Whoops, I'm a little behind on this one.

Pulling it out of the desiccate.

Slowly Unveiling...

Stubborn Eye Sockets...

Nice and clean.  Ready for PolyAcrylic....

Coated and not a sign of blue anywhere....

Has a slight smell still after 90 days in the desiccates.  Lingcod heads are much different then the piranha's, but should go away.  I probably should have done one more desiccate change out and left it for another few weeks.  The head literally shrunk about 25% which is weird.  I guess I'm a real head shrinker.

Added some life to him from an extra set of glass taxidermy eyes I had laying around.

Head distorted a little also, but will make for a great outdoor bar decoration!

Thanks for following along!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Break Out the Bait Thread! (9/22)
« on: September 23, 2020, 06:06:55 AM »
First day of Fall....

I went to the ortho to get another shot and my shoulder checked out.  Looks like surgery is around the corner, but super cool Doc and got me in and out 45 minutes early... with my cortisone shot in the shoulder and all!  Unfortunately, I was thinking I would be there for a while and packed all the Tuesday night fishing gear.  I called Squatch, but he ran home first and there was no way I was fishing on a crowded hot beach day (everyday seems to be a beach day now).

I ran home instead and worked on the new wine bar for a bit and grabbed a bite to eat before driving up to meet Steve,
We were totally due as our last 6 trips have only panned out a couple of bass and a Smoothhound.

I used two macks I had in the bag as bait thieves were terrible last night.  I brought a bunch of bonito scraps from the big bone I caught on Friday and decided to bust out the bait thread.  I've only used it once on the boat and never wrapped baits with it on shore.  Squatch does all the time and it looks like great stuff for the surf, so I made myself some a nice wrapped bonito belly bait and sailed it out.

The bait thieves were ruthless... but the evening view was very calming and relaxing.

About an hour before we were going to leave and after the tide started filling in pretty good, Steve's rod started doing the "Big Shark is On Your Line" dance!  Steve ran over and it looked like he was on, but dropped it.  He reeled in a perfect chunked bait, but the wire a foot up from the bait was shredded like the shark needed a good floss!  Damn!!!

30 seconds later and I'm standing next to my rod and it just loads up and doubles over!  Now it's been 5 months since I hooked my last shark, so needless to say I was a little rusty on setting the drag and such.  I thought I had it at my usual tight setting, but it must have been down a click or two on the star drag because this thing dumped my line down to the braid!  200 yards screaming out to sea, so I thought it might be a BSB.

Finally turned it and wasn't sure... I have only caught 5 sharks from the surf this year and all have been the sluggish 7-gill....  It's been since last year that I caught a soupie, so I forgot how bad ass they were!

Squatch did the honors and tail grabbed him.  I yelled "Sorry Steve, I Mike Iconellied You".  (That's when you say you have a giant or call out the wrong fish, and you are sadly mistaken)  LOL

71" female.  Incoming tide.  Bonito.  Waxing Crescent Moon.  2'-4' sets.

I was stoked to finally see both of us have an opportunity after all these blanked evenings, so I guess the "Fall Shark Season" has officially begun on the first day of Fall!

Thanks for reading and let the games begin!

Fishing Talk / Santee Lakes Upgrades
« on: September 23, 2020, 05:47:35 AM »
Restaurant, New Buildings, and upgrades all over the place.  As I was doing a family walk around the "ponds", I spotted another addition.

Looks like you won't have to leave your fishing spot to get any snacks!  They'll come to you!

The last two weeks I've been coming into the office to see a barrage of the fishing's "Deadliest Bananas" on my desk.  No sign of the culprit or culprits, and no one is talking.  I'd like to think I have an idea on who it is since I am the creator of many practical jokes at the office, but apparently they know of my Kryptonite!

Last Wednesday

This past Monday

This morning (I spray down my cubicle with IPA in the morning and lifted my keyboard to this... (Since I do this every morning, I know it wasn't there yesterday)

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving it!  I just want to see who my next victim will be so I could get them at some professional grade pranks!  hahahaha

Fishing Talk / Bait Sized Bonito
« on: September 21, 2020, 06:19:14 AM »
A neighbor told me they were everywhere at the jetties and Harbor Island.  I heard Let's Talk Hookup yesterday and they said they were all over and even in the surf.
I just talked to someone at work that said they didn't see or catch a single one at either spot.  When I went out on Friday, I didn't see a single sign of small bones at the jetties.

Has anyone seen or gotten into any this past weekend?

The beat writer for the Jets.... pretty much sums up my season only after week 2.  I guess I'll be fishing instead or something else.

I got the stain on after work yesterday.  Awesome wood grain patterns of the oak!

The barrel soaked up the stain a little too quick and it was hard finishing them.  I should have only done one at a time then trying to get them both done.

In either case, they are stained and just need the outdoor Spar Urethane to complete the wood seal.

Next will be to work on the bar top.
