Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / A few straglers
« on: September 24, 2014, 11:13:04 AM »
Not much to report lately, just a small assortment from MB from this week and two weeks ago. Been bouncing around from sea world to the inlet. Mostly fishing from Poverty Island, you know, the rocks along Quivera from which you get to watch the entire world going out for tuna and yellowtail, while reeling in wads of kelp and the occasional spotty.

Still, it was nice to have the bonito briefly blitz around high tide again. Reeled in three today before they disappeared. Bait along the rocks was very thick today, with a few bones slamming topwater just 5 feet off the rocks.

While casting for bones, this croaker hit my squid line, taking precious minutes away from the bone blitz.

Another behemoth, had to get the pole gaff out for this one.

And to wrap it up, this guy came in with a pile of kelp.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / MB morning

Got out today for the incoming again, hoping to have a few bonito hits. They came through, but once again, very quickly. There was about a 3 minute window when they came by close, even to just a few feet off the rocks, hitting topwater and sending baits flying. Only managed to grab one today.

This cheeky little bastard went about 30 yards out of his way to turn the corner and go after my squid pole. Tangled? No, not good enough for him as he cut that rig clean. Not to mention I had just spent precious time tying and retying it after having forgotten to put an egg on it. That earned this bone a place in the freezer as future bait.

Other than that, picked up two small bass on the squid.

This was the smaller one. No pic of the other one due to paddle boarders in the vicinity. Rather than attract them, I opted for a stealth release.

...only one bass.

Went out yesterday around sunrise for a few hours. Trip got cut short by lightning over Mission Bay. Not much to report, the bite was sparse. Bonito came charging in close to high tide again, briefly hitting bait at the surface, then disappearing. By the time I switched over to my bonito basher, they were gone. Bass hit on a jig with a squid tail.

Beautiful morning, despite lightning and light action.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Morning Bones 8/6/2014

Got up early and hit the front of Mission Bay to fish the incoming, with high tide at 7am. First cast brought in a small spotty on a 4" sardine slashbait. A guy came over on a paddleboard and asked what it was. This is a fish, I replied. He paddled away and got in the way of a party boat that was heading out, eliciting a blow of the horn and some harsh words over loudspeaker from the captain.

Just after high tide, some sloppy bones came through, foul hooking all kinds of body parts on the xrap.

After about an hour into high tide, the action cooled and I took off. 7 fish landed total, unfortunately nothing interesting showed up, other than the annoying paddleboard guy.
