Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Quick low tide session
« on: March 10, 2024, 07:15:47 PM »
Had the opportunity to hit the midday low tide for a reef walk on Saturday for a couple hours. Water was still pretty dingy. Not much going on, but did see a 10+ pod of dolphins cavorting near me for about 10 mins. They came in almost within casting distance. I only got one bump, but it ended up being the right kind and my first legal Hali of the year.

As the title says, please post any and all fishing reports. For the foreseeable future I will be fishing vicariously thru all such things. On Wednesday I had a heart attack and had 3 stints installed. The cardiologist said I was lucky it didn’t kill me. I have been released from the hospital and have been doing and feeling well. Just unsure when walking the beach and fishing will be allowed again. Thanks in advance for any and all reading material you guys can provide.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Found a few today. 6/24/23
« on: June 24, 2023, 08:15:25 PM »
Great trip on the beach this morning. Small surf made for an enjoyable day. All
to few of them in the weekends when I can fish this year. This ended up being my best day this year in the sand so far. First fish was a legal Hali, on cast 3. Figured it was close enough that I might have triggered the infamous “first cast curse”. Fortunately, the fish gods were in a good mood and a dozen or so casts later got legal hali # 2. Thus began a steady pick on Hali’s and WSB. Ended up landing 7 halibut and 6 WSB including a nice 31” legal WSB. All fish but 1 halibut came from the same spot, indeed standing on the same rock at the same spot.  All in all, an excellent day on the water.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Summer 2018 Fish Porn

Thought I would liven up Tom's day with some: 2018 Summer Fish Porn
-- Insert Porn music here --

:o

Some of the better grade fish I've pulled out this spring and summer so far.

26" WSB

26" halibut

21.5" Calico bass

18" Calico bass (Golden boy) - only notable for the most intense yellow throat I've seen.

20" Calico bass

21" Calico bass

21.5" Calico bass

23" Calico bass - this one went 6lbs on the scale.

Same fish

21" Calico bass

27" WSB (oh so close to getting a legal this year)

I actually had and lost what I am sure was my first l legal WSB on the line but the hook pulled.  He slammed the swimbait about 1/2 way in on the retrieve, made a blistering 20 yd run straight out, jumped completely out of the water by about a foot, took off sideways about 20yds and the hook pulled.  I'm estimating that it was between 30-36" long, but I'll never know for sure.

I had numerous other 16-18" Calicos that weren't deemed worth the effort of trying to get a pic due to the locations I was in.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Seal with a Shark Bite wound.
« on: April 21, 2018, 06:23:19 PM »
Hit some Low tide rocky spots this morning looking for halibut or Calico action but came up empty. I did run across an Adult seal that looks to have survived a recent attack by a great white.  You could see the turn up flesh as he was sitting out on a far rock. I even found a pool of fresh blood on a large rock where he must have been resting before the tide dropped and he relocated. The picture isn't the best but I had to zoom with the cell phone and then still crop the image.

Its tough to tell from the Pic, but the wound was circular and approx. 2-2.5 feet across.  I couldn't get a good look at his far side to see if he had another would there as well.

Pretty gruesome over all.  There was a gull that kept sneaking up and picking at the wound as well.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / BU Medley + surf exotic
« on: October 29, 2017, 05:11:50 PM »
Hit up one of my favorite BU beaches hunting for some Checkered Bass.
Definitely needed it this weekend after pulling a 10 hour workday on Sat for a special project.

Today turned into one of those rare days with plenty of fish with many species stopping by to say hello and a sweet surprise first for me as the last fish. Fish were caught on all of the following, LCFM, KM, Daiwa SM, and a swimmie.

All told, I put the following on the sand this morning,

12+ MAC
4 Cuda (up to ~20")
2 YFC
8 Checkers (6 cookie cutter 10" and 1 each 16" and 17")

and the sweet surprise was a beautiful 17" Opaleye caught on a swimbait of all things.

I always hear about people fishing moss or peas on the piers for them, but I don't remember many if any caught from the surf on a lure.

Thanks for reading.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / 4/15/17 VC - Score
« on: April 15, 2017, 08:31:56 PM »
Decided to hit up VC for some Seven hunting.
Surf was perfect at 1-2' and the wind died at sunset. Weeds were very manageable with only one small clump.

Ended up scoring a nice approximate 85" male seven. This guy was on steroids and hit like a freight train, making my reel scream when he hit. There was no guessing on this one. He made 3 mad runs at 3/4 drag. At first I thought I had a big bat as the first 1/2 of the fight there were no head shakes or tail slaps, just heavy pressure. It finally started making the rod thump once I got him into the surf zone. I had a nice couple hold my rod and take some pics for me, forgot to tape him as I got distracted answering questions. Bait was a Mac head.

That was it for the night, but very happy with getting 1 in only 2 hours of fishing.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / 1 for 3 in VC - 3/11/17
« on: March 12, 2017, 12:25:00 PM »
Having heard very little activity on the bat front, I decided to bail on the bat fight and head to VC to at least feel the tug. Ended up running into Chad and his father at the beach. Heard they hadn't had so much as a nibble all day. Decided to set up just south of them.

As Chad mentioned in his report, we had a lot of action, but a lot of missed opportunities. I ended up landing 1 out 3 runs last night. Pulled in this nice 94" male on a Mac head.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Solo Sesh VC - 3/4/2017
« on: March 05, 2017, 10:06:03 AM »
Decided to fish the VC 7 spot again even though the tides weren't ideal but the surf was too nice to resist.

Landed 2 with 2 other runs leaving shredded bait behind.

First up was this nice 83" male Seven.
*edit*
Forgot to mention this Seven had an old wound to his left gill set. 1-2 gill slit covers were missing causing a huge gap on that side. I wish I had taken a pic.
*edit*

This was followed by 2 full clicker runs that did not catch the hook but left shredded baits behind.
Finally this beautiful big girl came to play.
101" female Seven.

Not sure why, but all my sharks this year have come from just 1 of my rods. For whatever reason, the other rod always seems to end up casting into a crab or lobster pot. This is all I kept bring in on the second rod. I had even put a whole frozen sardine on it once that came back looking like your typical fish skeleton after just 15 minutes. The only thing left was tail, backbone, and head. lol

Lure & Rig Crafting Board / Basic sliding shark rig with a "hitch"
« on: February 27, 2017, 09:27:32 PM »
I thought I would post up another shark rig I've been using this year, so far with pretty good success.

The rig ends up being around 5ft in length when fully deployed and just over 3ft in it's casting configuration.
As with most rig's modifications could be made which will affect its total over all length. As depicted, there is an 18inch bite leader with an approximate 3ft sinker slide section.

The whole rig

Materials needed Include:
Hook - (My choice is the Eagle Claw L2004U 13/0 circle hook - strong, sharp and best of all $5.99 per 25 pack)
Rig/Leader material - (I am currently using 270lb 49 strand nylon coated cable)
Double barrel copper crimps - (Sized according to leader material)
Swivels - (I use 500lb stainless steel Krok swivels)
Sinker slide - (I am using the same Krok swivel with a clip)
Beads - (I am using 10mm beads here. I had to drill out the whole large enough to fit the leader and to allow sand not to plug up the hole.)
.051" stainless steel wire - (used to make the bait clip)
Shrink tubing - (sized to fit your selected crimps and leader material)

Creating the Rig
1) - Start by cutting a 5ft section of my rig/leader material. This length can be increased if you wish to increase the bite leader section, the sinker slide section or both.

2) - Crimp your selected hook to one end of the rig/leader material, making sure to use a 1" loop. This will be used to hang your bait on the bait clip. Slide a piece of shrink tubing down and over the crimp and shrink in place.

3) - Cut a section of the SS wire approximately 3/4" long.(This is variable, length is dependent on the length of your crimps.) you want make a 90 degree bend in the wire such that one side is the same length as your crimps.

4) - Slide a crimp down the rig/leader material until it is 18" above the hook eye, this will be your bite leader section and sinker stop/bait hook. Before crimping in place, insert the SS wire from step (3) into the crimp from the hook side and crimp in place. Finish by bending the wire into its final hook shape and covering the crimp with shrink tubing.

5) - Slide 1 or 2 beads down to the sinker stop crimp, followed by your sinker slide/snap swivel and 1 0r 2 additional beads.

6) - Slide on another piece of shrink tube, crimp and swivel and Crimp the swivel onto the end. This will complete your rig.

In order to improve casting distance and prevent the weight and bait from "windmilling", once the hook is baited, place the 1" loop you created to attach your hook and hang the hook and bait from the "bait hook" on the sinker stop crimp. This places the weight and bait very close together which prevents the dreaded "windmilling" and will allow you to use almost any length of bite leader between your sinker and the bait without causing casting issues.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Can I get a Double Double? - 2/25/2017
« on: February 26, 2017, 11:16:29 AM »
Double Sharks.
Double Species.

Well the trip seemed to be starting out right. Conditions were looking good. Just as I exited the freeway to my AO, I get a text from wife, "Did you know you left your bait on the counter?".

--- Oh Fudge!!!! I was thinking its definitely not worth the drive home and back out again seeing as its an hour each way. Not much in the way of bait in this area as well. Googled tackle stores near me and found one 15-20 mins away that was open late enough to get to and had macs. OK, now it won't be a wasted trip after all.

Disaster averted.

Ok, back at the AO and on the beach 10 minutes before sundown. I can definitively see how bad Adam and Chad had it last night. That end of the beach is even more eroded into the rocks then the last time I was there. Glad I decided to come in from the north side.

Not much going on for the first 1.5 -2 hours, then I get the familiar rod jiggle that signals a sevengill knocking on the door. I get the drag tightened and do the slow pull circle set and its on! He makes a few small runs and does a little back and forth along the beach before he hits the sand. All right, no skunk tonight.  91" male in full breeding condition.

OK, re-baited with another mac head and get it back out there. I check the other rod that had the mac tail to find a museum quality mac skeleton with just a tiny nubbin of meat left at the hook. Damn crabs/lobsters what ever they are that do this. I decide to put out head on this rod instead this time.

Another 45 minutes later, I get a short run on the first rod. By the time I get there, I cant feel anything on the line, but the sputnik wasn't popped, so I decided to let it sit for a few before checking the bait. Shortly after, I get the jiggle jiggle, and the line loosens up.  I do my slow circle set again and woohoo, fish on!  This one only makes one short 10-15 yd run but is doing lots of head shaking. Once I get him in the skinny, I can see its a smaller shark than the last one. It wasn't until I grabbed his tail and saw a dorsal fin, that I realized what I had. I just got my first legit adult Soupfin.  Taped, de-hooked and released. He measured in at a respectable 71".

Unfortunately, that was it for the night.  Needless to say, I was pretty stoked to have turned a near disaster of a night into a great Double Double night.

 :D

Still on the water, 2 touchdowns and 1 missed field goal so far. More info later.

1 of the Quarterbacks left me a souvenir.

Beautiful Water Conditions tonight up in VC.
Surf 1-2 feet, minimal current, and no weeds except for the car sized kelp bundle left high and dry on the beach. I counted at least 8-9 kelp holdfast's in the pile that was almost 3 feet high and 10 feet long.

Lots of sand missing from this spot after the last 2 series of storms, almost 3-4 feet of sand missing from the last time I was there. so much so that I had fish the opposite end of the beach as I did not feel like climbing down the boulders to get to the sand where I normally fish.

Hit the beach and set up Rod #1 in a nice hole and set up Rod#2 10 yds to the side at the edge of the hole.

Tally for the night was 3 runs with 2 almost twin male 7's on the beach.
The first measured in at 84" and had gnarly bite on the side of his head from another shark.
The second measured in at 86" and in the process of unhooking him he gifted me a bottom tooth that popped out.
This one was full of piss and vinegar, made a nice 50 yd run at 3/4 drag with lots of head shakes and took me 100 yds down the beach.
