Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Multi-day report
« on: August 20, 2019, 12:13:57 PM »
Hit the sand with Binh one night at a beach we rarely fish, both scored a calico with mine being legal at 16". We had salad issues.  Went solo last night to SK, lots of chopped salad. Surf very manageable, but that salad was no fun. Gave it an hour then called it. It's that time of the year, warm water, lots of salad.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Summertime Blues (19JUL2019)
« on: July 23, 2019, 12:59:36 PM »
Hit the sand with Binh hoping to find some straggling soups feeding on the grunnies. With it officially being summer, we weren't expecting much. We managed to beat the skunk, me with a leo and Binh with a shovel. Nothing too exciting, but it was nice to hook something that pulled some drag.
Water was pretty warm. Kelp was an issue early on, but really cleaned up as the tide rose. Lots of people and little parking. Mack was the bait of choice.

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / Full Day on the SD (10JUL2019)
« on: July 11, 2019, 12:56:58 PM »
Called in sick after seeing the yellows were on the verge of going off at the 'nados. Joined 44 other hopeful anglers looking for a big pay day. I'm glad I went!! Large schools of roving yellows were on the prowl and hungry. The bait guys did really well, but the casualties were on the high end for them. I and about a dozen others stayed mid-ship or on the bow armed with long rods and surface plugs. I went 5 for 8 and some spunky 10-12lb yellowtail. Others did really getting double Mexican limits. I had a blast! The barracuda were also out in force, sometimes overtaking the yellows. We actually had to drive away from them 2X. I kept 2 for grinner bait and even scored some HEFTY macks for the Fall grinner season.

The infamous Pacifica

Just a portion of our haul

Not much time for picture taking. Our count total was 156 YT, 17 Barracuda, and a lone calico. I know if we kept all the legal 'cudas that were caught, we'd have well over 100 of them. I released about 25 myself. I'm feeling much better now...

Met up with Andre just before sunset for some REAL Tuesday night fishing ;) As per my style, I'm last on the beach and I already see him releasing a little bat ray. The skunk is already off for him. I quickly rig up and toss out a mack head. While I get the rest of my gear together, I look over at Andre and see he's hooked up again! Pretty solid fight. Very soup-like, zigging and zagging and some breaching.  A quick drag up the beach for some pics and off it went. 68"

Damn, he's on fire already! Feeling the pressure, I get bit not that long after and it's a good one. Long runs resulting in seeing braid I haven't seen in well over a year. Andre slides her up and she's a beaut! My new PB at 75".

And then we a smattering of bat rays throughout the night that was not well received by me... Lol! I ended getting 4 and Andre gets 2. I actually ended my night with a bat. The bites were fast and furious. We were bit about every 10mins. We had 2 double hookups, which we both lost. Andre went 4 for 6 and I went 2 for 5. It was a pretty awesome night.

Andre's remaining catches in no particular order:

And my last one:

Andre has vaulted past Josh and my slow climb continues. Binh is in sight Andre!!!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Ignored all the signs (17JUN2019)
« on: June 18, 2019, 01:14:55 PM »
Hit it again last night. Shouldn't have ignored the mass amounts of salad on the sand and in the water or the uptick in surf that was predicted.  It was crap. Line went sideways within seconds of the hitting the water. Good sized surf was breaking 40-50yds out, so I was basically casting into a washing machine. 3way would come back all tangled. Called it after an hour of futility. I did have a cool discovery after making my first cast. Found this large mass of blubber ( I think) or it could be bat ray as Chris suggested that had some teeth marks in it.

It was pretty rank, but I still tried to cut off a chunk to pin on my hook. It was too tough to cut through and I could no longer stand the smell. The smell went to my hands then to my steering wheel. Lol!! Had to do some cleaning last night when I got home. I'll stay home the rest of the week as the surf is predicted get a little larger. Bummer since it's a grunion run too.

Solo sesh hoping for the best. Got to a beach littered with clumps upon clumps of seaweed, not a welcomed sight. I made the drive, so I'll make the effort. Just as I tie on my first rig, I spy with my little eye another longrodder. Jerry and I share pleasantries and he makes his way down the beach.

First cast in on a big mack head and in seconds, I already have strands of surf grass on my line from the waves crashing over it. Ugh. As every bigger wave comes rushing up the sand, it drags in the clumps. It's gonna be unfishable real quick. I get about a 5min soak and then I get the hard hit and slack line action. I pop out of my sweet lawn chair I found during the winter and furiously reel in the slack and come tight. Since I got to the beach at sundown, I was treated to multiple jumps and tail walks. So awesome! This is one of the harder fighting grinners I've had in quite a while and it had me thinking a baby white with the amount of line this guy pulled off of my line. I managed to draw the attention of some kids and they stuck around for the whole fight and beaching. They were as stoked as I was to see grinner on the beach. They take good pics too! Binh and Dre... you listening?

After a little coaxing, it swam off strong. You'll there's some blood in the pic, apparently sometime during the fight, the hook pulled and the hook caught the under side a few inches away from the gills. Hence the hard fighting and blood. It didn't get the gills. 72"

I toughed it out another 1.5hrs and called it after the many clumps of seaweed I reeled in. We even got checked for our licenses. Jerry beat the skunk with a solid fish of his own that he can tell you about. Sorry Jerry, you were taking too long to post, so I wrote up my own report. Slow climb this year...

Sunday
I was skunked, but I did hook a soupfin and fought it for a couple of minutes before it veered left and cut me off on some structure. Typical soupie fight and tail-walks. It went quiet the rest of the night for me. It was great to finally fish clean water.

Monday
I hit it again hoping for redemption. Lots of critter bites all night and got a skunk busting leo in the 40" range to save face. It even coughed up a big octopus which I promptly pinned on my hook. Lots of critter bites on it, but nothing else for the rest of the night.

Wednesday
Binh felt the heat Dre was putting on him, so he added an extra day to this weeks surf sesh. Hahahaha!!
I made the location call and he gets there before dark, but he graciously waits for me before he catches anything. I arrive to improved conditions as it was pretty windy Monday night, but still no salad!! YES! I can deal with a skunk, but spending the night reeling in clumps quickly breaks my spirit.

We dealt with some critter bites, but nothing for a while. We enjoyed the light show in the waves and pondered if the red tide was gonna eff things up for us. The grunion barely made a showing too, not looking good. Then Binh gets the bump and slack line. He's on! Was happy to see him hook up after only having one for the year. He needed it. I grab the tail rope and haul it onto the hard pack. A few quick pics and a measurement (64") and off it went.

Not too long after, I get the same bump and slack line. I reel in the slack and come tight. It's always a cool sight to watch it splash around in the surf, even more so with all the bioluminescence in the water. Soupfin are awesome fighters! If only they got as big as 7gills. The best part was watching Binh try bring it up on the beach by hand. He basically questioned my manhood when I tail roped his. So he initially refused to use my tail rope in favor of being a man. It was like watching the Keystone Cops do sandhanding. Hilarious!! Guess who finally came to their senses and got the tail rope...

No measurement taken, but it was thicc and probably in the 70" range. Binh called it not long after that and I stayed another hour for nada. Last night debunked a few things that Binh held as facts and he's also gonna get himself a tail rope  ;)

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / TNGC (09MAY2019)
« on: May 10, 2019, 03:55:44 PM »
Usual Thursday outing, usual peeps. Location was pretty weedy, but fishable. Surf low. Pretty quiet night. Binh beat the skunk with a mid-sized leo and I volleyed with 50" mama bat ray. She was thicc. Dre wore the stripe, but he got a 7gill the other day, so I don't care  ;)

Before I hit the beach, I treated myself to a surf and turf burrito...

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / P.S.S.K.R.S.K.L.M.N.O.P.

Solo sesh at the witching hour. Fished from 11:30pm to 4:30am. Surf was up just a bit, but current and salad was no issue at all. No critter bite, but plenty in the skinny. It was minefield of round rays, little SNGF, and leos. Lots of little eyes aglow as I scanned the skinny with my headlamp.

First bite came around 1:30am. I was so tired at that point, I was basically catatonic in my chair. Asleep, but eyes wide open. When it hit, it hard! It took me about 5 seconds to register what was going on, but I eventually got up out my chair and grabbed my rod. Very solid fight that eventually lead me about 50yds away from my gear. Once I finally beached her, I had to sprint back to get my dehooker. She taped out at 70" and I only took one picture as she looked totally spent and I didn't to have to harvest her. It took a bit of coaxing but she finally swam away.

Settled back in my comfy chair after peeling away some layers. Got mighty warm from the fight and the sprint. Almost pulled a Josh and stripped down to an UnderArmour skin tight shirt. Thank goodness I don't own one ;) Nothing but love Josh :-*

Final bite came around 3:30am and this one was doozy! Felt like I a big 7gill that decided to fight like a soupfin. Got me down into braid I haven't seen I put it on the reel. I was tempted to button down the drag a little bit more, but I still had plenty of line so didn't want to risk losing to a pulled hook. When I finally got it turned and I was back in the mono, it took another blistering run and I was almost back to where I was in the beginning of the battle. Another run later, I drag up onto the hard pack via my tail rope and let out a giant sigh of relief. This one was touch and go as to whether I'd land it. So far I'm batting a 1.000!! I haven't the opportunities that Tom and Steve have had, so I gotta make 'em count. This big girl ended up being my PB at 74" and she was girthy. I'm guessing she was with child(s).  Took 2 crappy pics and set her free. She w=swam off strong, but still spent the extra 5 minutes or so to scan the skinny and wet sand to make sure she didn't wash up. I also did the same for the first one. Let 'em go, let'em grow.

Bait for the first soup was fist sized chunk of fairly decent Norwegian mackerel from the Asian market and the other was caught on a bonito head (pictured) that I caught last year while I was unemployed. It held up well. I wish I had more as they seem to be keyed in on big baits. Unfortunately, most of my macks that were recently caught, are on the smallish size. Tired.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Earth Day Bat Rays (22APR2019)
« on: April 23, 2019, 04:08:18 PM »
Hit RSK hoping to strike gold again this time with Chris and Kam. Brought my lawn chair with me and almost fell asleep a few times as I was running on fumes after only getting 8hrs of sleep in the last 2 days. I missed a for sure grinner bite early on. Darn thing knocked my rod out of the spike and totally shredded the mack head. Re-bait and didn't get another sniff until near peak high for a sub 40" bat then followed that up with a 50" class bat during the outgoing. Grunion made a slight showing and kelp was about, but tolerable. I did get a little cold.

Once the kids got to bed, jumped on 8N rushed south to join in on the fun. It took a while for the fun to start, but finally got my first and second 7gill of the year and my first leopard shark. Mackerel for the leo and bonito for the 7gills. Both 7gills were males, 70' and 82". Leo was 56". The 7gills were caught on the outgoing tide. The little 7gill had someone else's hook in his mouth. I tried to pull it out, but it was maybe a 6/0 light wire circle with a very short length of mono that was totally embedded in the roof of his mouth. It was pretty recent as the hook was baited with bat ray. Grunion even made a solid showing. Called it at 1am... pretty long night.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / TNGC solo outing (04APR2019)
« on: April 09, 2019, 02:19:25 PM »
Soaked a mack head for a solid hour before changing baits. I tossed the head into the water, it was pristine. Was hoping a big'ol center chunk would illicit a bite. That one also soaked for an hour for naught. Was texting back and forth with Chris throughout the night and let him know I was done and ready to head home. Tossed out the last section from the mack and turned my back to start packing up my gear. Within 10mins of the soak, I get a 7gill style bite. I ignored it as I was getting those all night, but they weren't true bites, just the surf and current acting super turbulent and confused. Picked up my rod to reel in the slack and I see big splash in the distance. My line comes tight and it's game on! Several hard runs going north and south let me know it was a soupfin. It has been so long since I've had one on, I forgot how fun they are. Surf and the surge was up, so it actually helped me land it as a big wave rushed in and pushed it up onto dry land.  Took a couple quick pictures and pulled the hook. She swam off strong. Hung out until 1am for nothing else. Almost fell asleep on the beach in my comfy beach chair I recently found.
