Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Slickers fishing
« on: February 27, 2015, 10:48:22 PM »
After seeing Binh's report, I decided to give it a go. Fished in my slickers in Mission Bay. Squid as bait. Bait stealers, but mostly quiet. Well, except the wind and sprinkling. No pics, only had my phone. Not getting that wet. Besides, we've all seen sh!tty weather, right?

Really not worth writing home about it, bit after numerous skunks and a loose drag, this was awesome! I did get to meet a couple members for the 1st time. Always nice to meet different SD members. Thanks again Joe for the clip on lights, they're awesome and help out a lot when the fire is yards away from the rods.

Fishing Talk / Let's try this again!

I'm fishing tomorrow (Tues) night for sure! It's looking like a solo trip unless someone wants to roll out or I meet up with them. I'll be on the road heading out by 6pm. SNBF is right around the corner and it looks like the other counties are starting to come alive. Hit me up!

Fishing Talk / Might be able to fish tonight....

If I can, who's down? PM me with a cell number and I'll text you if I can or not. The wife is flying back later this afternoon from a work trip and if she's not too tired to deal with the kiddos, then I'm fishing.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Monday funday with the boys
« on: February 16, 2015, 03:59:27 PM »
Stopped to get some candy.

WFO on white perch.

Fishing was non-stop. Ghosties were huge, had to cut them in pieces. Also got lots of worms too. Worked equally well. Awesome day with the boys.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Skunked.... but it was awesome!

Hit the bay at the mid point of the in-coming tide armed with squid. Excited to try out my new spinning set-up. First spot yielded one solid pick up and drop and numerous bait stealer bites. Off to my second spot.

First cast was doozy, as it hit the channel without a backlash or losing my bait. I love my conventional gear, but it is nice to not deal with backlashes. Set rod in the holder and went to set up my other rod. Second rod is sent out. Begin thinking to myself, "I wonder if it was a good idea to top off the spinner with braid and only have a 2' mono leader?" I normally will put on at least 100yds of 40# mono on top of the braid. The spinner gets absolutely rocked! It hit so hard the rod holder almost fell over even though I have a free-spool option on my reel that I tested prior to casting.

The fight is magnificent, a blistering run straight away from me. The spinner has a beautiful voice. Then my worst fear becomes a reality, it turns right and heads to the buoy. Then the rubbing ensues... braid is terrible for abrasion resistance. I put it in free-spool hoping the lack of pressure will possibly get it turn back... nope. It keeps running. Half way down the spool and put it back in gear. Not an easy thing to do on a spinning reel. Another 50yds later, my line goes limp.  :'( Not surprised, but I was hoping for a miracle. I lose half my braid, my rig, and my bat. BUT, it was so awesome to see it happen! Would have rather been spooled, then maybe I would've had time to get my phone and record some of the carnage.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Kiddos fishing

Hit the bay with the boys for a little father/sons quality time. Squid strips, shrimp, and cut anchovies was the bait. Bite really kicked in on the outgoing tide. Totals: over a dozen on the big 'ol jack smelts, one round ray, a sub 20" bat, and a white perch. Boys had lots of fun. Love SD winters  ;D

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Binh was on fire!!
« on: January 16, 2015, 04:17:47 PM »
With eels on his hook.

Macks were the hot bait for him, I on the other hand remain skunked. Tried both squid and mack. Shore pound and downhill current made things awefully difficult. Sacrificed 2 rigs, but Binh managed to snag one of them so that it could be returned to me  ;D

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Went for grinners, got the critters

Combo report from the 2 trips, one in the little the other we hit the surf.

1st trip:

Bait was squid. 2 horn sharks for my buddy, a sub-legal sculpin for me. Lots of pickups then dropped baits.

2nd trip:

Squid for me, macks for Binh. Ripping current, lots of bites. Binh got a little leo, a sandie, and a round ray which became bait.  I got a yfc on my small rod while waiting the long rod to go off.

That rod belt sure came in handy ;)

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Tough night
« on: December 28, 2014, 10:04:14 PM »
Hit up MB with Binh and my buddy for a little bait n wait. Squid and mack were the baits. I was ready to pull an all nighter, but the wife complainedoc back in several texts to me... ugh... had to call it early 😩

Managed a spunky spottie on whole squid and an 11/0 hook. Ambitious.

The guys decided to make a move, I hope they did better.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / MBay skunkage 12/18
« on: December 19, 2014, 10:53:40 AM »
Armed with squid, Binh, my buddy Oscar, and me hit the spot with 3hr window to work with. Oscar managed a 20"+ bat and a spottie and that was it. Tide wasn't ideal, but it was a great night with good company and a little fire to keep warm by. Lots of bait stealers, but not our intended target. Maybe this Sat night...
