Fishing Talk / Re: Day At The Docks 2024
« on: April 12, 2024, 02:40:56 PM »
Got there around 2pm with daughter in tow. My daughter had fun opening all the tackle boxes at the used tackle booth. She said it was like opening treasure boxes. Chopped it up with some old co-workers. Bought some shirts and a hoodie for my kids at H&M. Stoked I'm still getting an employee discount... as long as Ollie or Danny Wade is there  ;) Called it after about 2hrs. Maybe it's just me getting old and grumpy, but Day at the Docks has lost some of its luster...

I'm bidding on something as I type! My AI stocks are doing well, so I can treat myself.

I asked a local if they've seen any shovelnose in recent years at sunset beach. He said "no nothing exotic like that." I thought it kinda funny to call a shovelnose exotic, considering they will absolutely flood the area when they do come through. Haven't seen one in a few years though.

Back in the 90's and early 2000's, we would catch absolute beasts in the bay all the time!  Now, I am totally shocked just getting a medium sized one back there.  I really haven't surf stalked in a while either, so I'm not sure of their abundance anymore.

I'm sure the abundance of white sharks may play some role...

Took my son's surf fishing. Good thing I brought some market shrimp as the sandcrabs were non-existent. Quality over quantity that day.

1 - walleye
4 - bsp (all over 14")

Brought home the walleye and 2 bsp as they were gut hooked. Absolute rod benders and drag pullers on 6lb!! Saw a couple dredge boats pumping sand in the distance to replace lost sand due to beach erosion. Water was clear, but cold. Could see lots of kelp and misc "foliage" partially buried in the skinny by the sand they were pumping onto the beach. Lost several rigs due to it. Left phone at home.

No fishing, but still lots to do at in the backyard, rain or shine. I've been grafting fruit tree seedlings. About a 50% success rate. Been grafting some tropical fruit trees (mangoes, sapote, guava, cherimoya) and the normal stuff (avocado, apple, peach, oranges). Hoping to get better at it soon. Takes a while to get mini trees from seeds as root stock. I've also been air-layering fruit trees to get immediate clones. Loquats are easy, everything I suck at. My new China made green house has been helped tremendously. Keeps me dry during the rain and keeps tropical trees happy, warm and humid.

Making the decision to select the Bat Fight Night has been challenging the last 16 years.  I haven't been able to make everyone happy and can't keep switching it trying to avoid all of the events that go on in SoCal in March, April, and May.  I'll do this now to give everyone over a year to plan the next one.  I will put it on the SNBF FaceBook page once the 2024 SNBF has finished.

As for next years Bat Fight (2025), I will call it out now so everyone knows what day it will be.  I'm going back to the night of the time change, Saturday March 8th 2025.

Works for me!! I got a couple new spots in mind...

Not much in the way of fishing for me in 2023. Usual catch of some YT, BFT, YFT off of the sport boats. Piers kicked out some corvina, sargo, macks, and lots of queenfish. Surf was dead to me. Perch and croaker made the rounds. I kicked out more kidney stones than sharks this past year.

I'll be putting in a more concerted effort to get out for grinners this year. Got some new locations in my sights, here in SD and a bit further. More posts will be made as well. Oh yeah, I still need to buy a license  :o

Deepwater rockfishing is underrated fun. I remember loading up on freezer filler trips back in 90s on the Indian during my days as the "reel boy" at H&M.
