Thanks for all the kind words guys!! Kids need to be outdoors more doing things like fishing, hiking, exploring... what have you. Especially the kids who never do that sort of thing. I'm getting older. At some point, I won't be able to do this sort of thing. Doing my best to pass it along.

Will make a more concerted effort to post more. Slowly getting back out onto the sand. It's been a tough year.

Son has been begging to go surf fishing ever since our recent camping trip. I invited his best bud, Landon, to come along as he needs an escape from some family things that have unfortunately been weighing on him. He's a complete novice, never even held a fishing pole.

We hit the the beach. They body boarded for about an hour while I rigged up the rods and cut up the bait. Brought market shrimp as back up in case we couldn't find sand crabs. Gave Landon a quick, but an in depth lesson on the use of a spinning combo and hooking the bait. The fish gods were pleased with me, as Landon was the first to hook up, all on his own! I think I was more stoked than him! Lol!! Several "hell yeahs" and high 5s conveyed my excitement. UL spinning gear made the fight far more challenging, but they were legit winter time fish as the were consistently 10"-16". They landed about 15 fish with several missed bites in 2hrs of fishing.

Hearing my son tell his friend, "see fishing is so much fun!" and then hearing this reply, "when can we go again?" made my day  ;D

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / Re: My Year Chasing Tuna (10/28)

I haven't fully got into the Tuna thing yet but I did give it a try. I guess the main thing is all the fuel it takes to get the opportunity to try to get them to bite, but then again it's all about the hunt and the time spent with friends. Glad you didn't come back empty handed, Boccaccio are good for something ;D Looks like a sweet boat, hope you get the tuna to cooperate before it all comes to an end for this year  ;)

Me thinks you and Tom need to link up and share some knowledge...

Ended up ordering 3 extra "perch" reels for my kids since they're so cheap and I know they'll get dunked a bunch.

Which one did you order? I like the look of the Alaris. Would be nice to know how it performs in the hands of a fellow surf fisherman since the reviews tend to come from pond hopping midwesterners.

Got 2 of the Alaris 20 spinning reels for my boys and the pink Avenger 1000LEA for my daughter. Matched them up with the CE-S-802UL rods. Took one of my sons and his buddy, who's never fished before, and hit the surf. Reels feel like what I paid for. Very plasticky. We loaded up on some chunky perch with the biggest going about 13-14". Drags felt just... fine. Noticed the knob that held the handle in place would occasionally loosen and had to be tightened up as there would be some play in the handle while cranking in line. They're perfect for perch and other smaller surf critters. The reel makes a super loud clicking/ratcheting sound when tightening the drag.   These are the epitome of disposable reels. Nowhere near the quality or refinement of a Shimano Sedona, a Penn Fierce, or similar reel. I'm hoping they last a year or 2. The rods were better built, but not much better. Fast action. Noticed the reel seat would loosen up over time and the reel wiggle around. I had to walk over and check the boy's rods. Did this about 4 times.

Not a whole lot to complain considering what I paid for them. 3 reels and rods for less than $160 including S&H.

Still waiting for them to arrive. One my sons really digs surf fishing, so we'll put them to the test ASAP.
