Nice sale for Basspro standards. Didn't see any OM surf rods on sale though :'( I'd love to have another.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Re: wide open grinner bite

Good to hear we weren't the only ones having a no so great night.

Looks like my horse is running away with it!  Binh is ahead by 4 furlongs, while you stalled at the gate!  LOL

(Seriously though, nicely done.  Thornyback Rays are -1 and Round Rays are 0 btw)  ;D

I'm just using him to distract the bycatch while my bait marinates in the water for the right kind.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Binh wants that spinner 05/26
« on: May 27, 2015, 12:41:30 AM »
Hit the surf. Mackerel as usual. Fished for ~2.5 hours. Surf was up and kelp was building as the tide was dropping. Binh got a 52" leo and I got a measly round ray. Tide dropped too fast for us.

I did manage to crack my rod during the cast. Stupid Penn Prevail, don't buy this piece of crap!!

I honestly hope so.  We need it way too badly and just maybe Chris' GT's will get pushed our way and we'll be long rodding 100 pounders soon off the SoCal coast!  LOL

If anything, someone may get a YT from shore while baiting and waiting for a grinner.

Tackle Talk / Re: Penn Spinfisher SSV 5500
« on: May 25, 2015, 10:35:40 PM »
They're definitely not water proof! A slather of grease on the internals helps a bunch. I love my 3500 and 6500LL though! I slayed a bunch of 20-35# YFT on the 3500 last year. Smooth and powerful! The 6500LL has landed me a few bats in the high 40" range. I wish they'd make a live liner model for the 3500.

Tackle Talk / Re: New Toy Penn Fathom
« on: May 25, 2015, 10:31:24 PM »
You'll love that Fathom! I have a 30 and two 40s. I run 50# braid on the 30 with 30# mono and 65# on the 40s with 40# mono. I'm not a fan of running straight braid, because when I backlash, I backlash the sh!t out of it and I find it harder to pick out braid than mono.

Lots of rod options out, but I wouldn't go with anything shorter than 10' when surf fishing. Budget is usually the biggest determining factor. I like the Ocean Master rods (Model:OMS12C) great power, light weight, less fatigue, quality components, and pretty affordable. The longer butt section on the surf rods are nice for casting, but like Dave, I cut mine down as well. I guess I'm just too used to our West Coast long rod style.

Why is everything a 6:1 gear ratio now? They have their place, but so do the lower ratios with more power.

I'm with you. I like a gear ratio in the high 4s to 5 myself. Still enough speed, but no sacrificing the power to winch on the big ones.

What an awesome day!! Spinner catching a grinner! An angel is still on my list >:(
