Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / What's that smell?
« on: May 19, 2016, 10:37:03 AM »
 ::)
Well after my last session catching my first sevengill (and new PB of anything!) I naturally assumed that I would be catching beasts every outing now, Haha.
Dad and I hit the sand again last night for a few hours and went through 3 big macs for one big skunk.
Conditions were great, but no one was home.  We had a nice, relaxing evening though  :)
A couple of pics just for fun.

Next time...

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Cinco de mayo siete del diablo!
« on: May 06, 2016, 09:28:04 AM »
My wife and kids were spending the day with her folks and wouldn't be home till late so I decided to hit the beach.  Haven't been out in over a month, since before the baby was born, so I was stoked to get the chance, plus my dad was able to get out of work in time to meet me up there.
After work I grabbed some frozen macs and a sandwich and headed to the spot.  Conditions were perfect!  No wind, no salad, 1-2 foot rollers, and a slight uphill current.  I got my first bait soaking at about 5:30 just as my dad rolled up.  This was his first time surf fishing so we had to set up the long rod that he picked up off of craigslist.  I showed him how to use the casting cannon and he took a few practice casts and got a bait in the water.  We sat back and enjoyed the view.

Changed baits every 30 minutes or so and not a nibble.  They didn't even look touched.  At least we got a show from a few pods of dolphins playing a ways out and a solitary sea lion going by.  Then this little plane came buzzing by super low to the water, that was fun to watch.

It started getting dark and bait was getting low.  I had to be back home when my wife got there so I could help haul all the sleeping kids up to their beds.  I was expecting her call any minute when I launched my last chunk of mac.  This was my best cast of the night too so I was anxiously watching my rod and the clock at the same time.  After about 10 minutes I see the line go a bit slack.  I knew something was up because it hadn't moved once the whole evening.  As I head tward my rod it takes a big bow.  As I picked it up it went slack again so I started reeling as it swam toward me. Once I felt tension again I waited for it to turn and I sent the hook.  Instantly felt the head shakes and tail slaps and all I could think was "don't loose it!"  The sheer weight was amazing, no blistering run like a big bat, but just brute strength.  Once I got it to the white water it got really pissed.  I handed the rod off to my dad and grabbed the shock leader.  As I tried to pull him up a bit with the shock leader it snapped!  I yelled as it turned it's head toward the deeper water and lunged for it's tail.  I got a hold of it just in time and started pulling it back up the sand.  The first time it came around and snapped at me I think I screamed like a girl haha!  I used to catch and keep a lot of snakes (including venomous ones) but that was a whole new experience!  I could barely move him so my dad put my rod in the holder and helped me drag it out.  I'm sure it would have been funny to watch as we jumped around trying to keep away from it's mouth.  Adreniline was pumping full speed but I remembered to grab the tape and pliers so I got a measurement and a few quick pics before pulling the hook and getting it back in the water.  Sorry for the poor pics, all we had was the cell phones.  Measured out at exactly 98"!

WHAT A RUSH!
Thank you all for the advice and help you've given me!
Can't wait for the next one!

Fishing Talk / Need a license to take the kids fishing?
« on: January 26, 2016, 10:52:16 AM »
Hey guys,
I couldn't find anything really clear on this through DFW.
Do I need a fishing license to take my kids fishing?
They are getting pretty good, but still need a little help and I don't want to get busted by some warden who thinks I'm just giving my pole to my kid since I don't have a license.
Any experience with this?
Thanks!

Tackle Talk / Beginners fishing gear

My 5 year old son asked Santa for a "big boy" fishing pole for Christmas. I guess the recent fishing trips have got him hooked  ;D
Right now he has a little 2' long cheapo push button setup that I got each of them to start off with.
My question is, what would you guys reccomend as a next step up for him?
A larger, good quality push button outfit?
A spin casting setup.
A spinning setup?
Im thinking something that can use 6-10 lb line for bass, trout, harbor, etc.
What says you?

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Daddy Daughter Date 11/19/15
« on: November 20, 2015, 11:57:55 AM »
Since I'd taken the boys out fishing lately, by daughter has been begging for her turn.  I've been wanting to get back on the sand, but didn't feel right doing a trip for me before I took her out.  It makes my heart so happy that all my kids like to fish, and I think my daughter enjoys it even more than the boys  :)
The anticipation made my work day take forever, but finally it was time to load the gear and head to the harbor!
We got settled just after sunset.  She was using squid on a carolina rig while I soaked big chunks of mack in hopes of another shot at that harbor monster.  We fished until 8:30 or so when it started to get chilly.  Result: Bailey 5 croaker, daddy 0.  I didn't even get a nibble, but we had a blast!  She did have one solid hookup that busted the 6 lb leader, that got her blood pumping  ;D

First little croaker

Her biggest

Couldn't ask for more!

I am blessed! :)

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Father-Son time 10/28/15
« on: October 29, 2015, 09:58:33 AM »
I love fishing with my kids!
When I got home from work yesterday my middle son came running up asking if I'd take him fishing.  He even said he'd finished all of his mac-n-cheese already so we would have time to go!  How do you say no to that?  :D
We grabbed some bait and gear and headed to the harbor.  Hudson has a pretty short attention span (what 4 year old doesn't?) so I didn't think we'd be there long.  We got to the water and put some fresh mussel out on his pole and waited for a bite.

A few minutes and about a thousand questions later he said, "Dad, something's pulling on it!  I hope it's a hammer head shark!"  Well it turned out to be a little white croaker, but he was just as excited!

When we threw it back a seagull instantly slammed it and gulped it down, he loved that even more LOL!
When I got his next bait out I decided to soak a mac chunk on my heavy gear while I was helping him.  The next hour or so he caught a few more croaker and fed the seagulls while I threw out a few fresh chunks of mac for no love.
It was pretty windy evening and once the sun went down he was ready to head home.  I started packing up when the clicker on my Squall 40 went crazy.  I grabbed the rod, flipped it into gear, and set the hook.  The drag was screaming and what I'm sure was a huge bat took off across the harbor.  I kept adding drag until it was buttoned down and it was still going like it didn't know it was hooked.  Finally got it stopped after over 100 yards were gone and my thumb was burning.  I started working on gaining some line back but it must have found something sharp to wrap around because right then I felt a pop and it went slack.  I was so bummed, but at the same time so stoked and full of adrenaline to finally hook up to a monster!  This just keeps getting more addicting!
Hudson thought it was cool I was fighting a monster!
Any way, we had a great evening together and I'm looking forward to the next one  :)
