General Board / Hey Guys
« on: July 03, 2019, 01:26:52 PM »
Just wanted to drop in and say Hi to ya'll!
Sorry I've been so MIA lately.  I've been dealing with a lot of stuff in life and decided to make fishing a lot lower priority.
I probably won't be fishing much, but will report when I do.  I'll try to post a bit more otherwise though as well.
I miss all you guys and am excited to see all the great fish reports lately!
I'm continuing my reel repair gig still so if there's anything you guys  need in that regard please let me know.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Team VC Bat Fight 2019 Report
« on: March 12, 2019, 11:22:33 AM »
Well I'm crazy busy right now so this will be brief.  I was in Indianapolis all last week and flew home late Friday night.  Spent the morning with my family and after lunch my dad and I headed out with my 3 oldest kids.  I weren’t expecting much and didn’t plan to stay long.  Conditions were good as far as surf and salad, none of either, but it was cold and the wind kept getting stronger.
We fished about 3 hours mackerel on the long rods and squid on the critter rod.
About half way in my dad gets a nice bounce on his rod and after putting pressure on the circle hook he starts loosing line fast.  Thought for sure we were gonna land a nice bat, but after a couple minutes, the fight changes and I’m seeing tail slaps.  Knew then it was a sevengill, and it was putting up a great fight.  After another run, he got it in close, but is just stayed out in waist deep  water, refusing to get any closer.  Joe and I didn’t want to wrestle with it out that far and waited until my dad was able to finally coax it close enough to get our hands on it.
Once we had it beached I realized why it was so hard to get in.  This male was big and fat!  Measured at 98” and had to have been 180-200 lbs.  We took some quick pictures and let the kids check it out and then returned it to the sea.  I had to get him in deeper water and rock him a bit, but he finally kicked away strong.

After that, the long rods stayed quiet, but the critter rod was keeping the kids busy.  They had a blast and their smiles made my heart happy!

I wore the stripe all day, but I’ve never been more happy to be skunked.
It was a great day!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Buzzer Beater - 1/24/19

Andre made the long drive up to VC to meet me at a new spot I’ve been wanting to try.  We got there at low tide and what looked great on the high tide was now snag city.  We soaked one rod each for a half hour before deciding to make a move.  Of course I broke off and lost a rig  :(

We made a move to a new spot that we weren’t real hopeful about, but it was the only fishable spot near by.  We put out 2 rods each.  Longcast Joe showed up and fished awhile too.  After about 3 hour, I had no action but Andre had a couple pull downs.  The tide was coming in fast and we were running out of sand.  I was moving some of our gear up on the rocks as we started packing up when Andre yelled that my rod was bouncing. As I picked it up it went slack in typical sevengill manner.  Reeled in the slack, set the hook, fish on!

After a short fight Andre beached this pretty 72” female.  She spit out a bunch of mac chunks on the sand as we pulled her up, so she was the one stealing our bait!

Stats for Tom:
Female Sevengill
72" long
High Tide
Mac head

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / A Good Start to 2019 - 1/8/19
« on: January 09, 2019, 08:31:21 AM »
It seems like forever since I'd been fishing and I desperately wanted to get out on the sand this week.  After checking the surf report, I knew last night was my only chance.  We have huge surf predicted for the rest of the week and sure enough, I could see it getting really big as I drove to work this morning.

I was so anxious to start fishing that I bailed a bit early from work and got to my spot right away.  The conditions looked decent and turned out to be really good the whole night.  2-4 foot waves, very little salad, current, or wind.  I was expecting it to be pretty cold, but I was comfortable the whole evening.

I set up two rigs.  My 12' Penn Prevail with the Penn 9500SS and my 10' Daiwa Emcast with the Penn 970 Mag Power.  Both with the same terminal rigs, but I baited the longer rod with bat ray and the short one with mackerel.  Once I had them soaking I settled in to enjoy the sunset.

With the weather we've been having and the changing beach terrain, I wasn't expecting much.  It was a really quiet evening.  A couple of people walked the beach with their dogs and kids, but as the sun set I had it all to my self.  I checked my baits a few times while I waited, but it was really slow.  No bites or bait stealers or anything.  Then about 6:00 some kelp rolled through and I had to reel in both rigs and reset.  At around 6:45, I'm thinking to myself that I'll give it another 15 minutes and if nothing happens I'll head home.  Right then my longer rod took a good bounce and then a deep bow!  As I ran up to the rod, the drag was singing that beautiful song of "Fish On"!  It was pulling so hard I had difficulty getting the the rod out of the holder.  I finally did and set the hook a couple times just to be sure.  The fish just kept running.  Must have taken 150 yards on the first run.  I was expecting a Sevengill, but this sure wasn't acting like one.  Once I got him stopped, we had a few minutes of standoff where I couldn't gain line and he wasn't taking any.  When I finally started getting line back, he started heading north.  I worked him in closer and closer as he went, but as soon as I got him in the breakers he took off again and peeled another 80 yards off.  This run must have tired him out because after he turned I was able to work him back in and with a few well timed waves got him in the skinny.  I could see now that it was in fact a Sevengill, and a pretty good size one.  It had a huge head on him and heavy body.  Since I was solo, I loosened the drag and set the rod back in the spike so I could drag him further up on the sand.  This was the heaviest 7 at this length that I've landed.  He cooperated well for a quick hook removal, measurement and pics.  Then I got him back in the water and he took off immediately.  This male taped out at 89".

After he swam off, I sat down for a few minutes to enjoy the adrenaline rush and send pics to a couple friends.
I put out another bait, but it sat idle for the next half hour and it was time to pack up.
Met another buddy on the way out to share some bait then home to tuck the kiddos into bed.
It was a good day  :)

Stats for Tom:
Male Sevengill
89" long
Tide just started coming in

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Birthday sharking 11/13/18
« on: November 14, 2018, 10:19:30 AM »
My birthday was Monday and I dislike getting older  :-\  BUT, I love being spoiled by my wife and kids  ;D
We started a tradition several years ago of making our birthday cards for one another rather than buying them.  I love this and highly recommend it!

I also got some great tunes for my commute!

We had a relaxing evening eating pizza and watching a movie, then got the kiddos to bed.  My wife conked out on the couch so I started a new show on Netflix called Norsemen.  Great show!  ;D

So on to the fishing....
The next night I met my Dad at a new spot I'd been wanting to try.  Conditions were perfect!  No wind, or salad to deal with and the surf was so calm I could wade out knee deep and not get my shorts wet.
We had a pretty relaxing time since there weren't any bites for the first hour or so.  Then I had bump on one of my rods and when I checked it, it was snagged.  While I was breaking off the snag, my Dad picked up my other rod because it had gone slack, then he said I think there's something here!  We traded rods and sure enough I feel a bump bump and set the hook, fish on!  I could tell right away it was the right kind although it felt small.  After a short fight I was able to drag this 63" male Sevengill up on the sand.

It was time for the kids to get their hands messy and cut up some pumpkins.
I taped down plastic on the floor and we put in the Charlie Brown Halloween DVD.
They do all the digging and scraping out of the goop and seeds, but I still do most of the knife work.
The older kids draw out pictures of what they want it to look like.

Happy Halloween from the Bussanich tribe!

Reel Repair & Maintenance / Pretty Little Ultra Light
« on: August 21, 2018, 04:11:58 PM »
Getting ready for our vacation to Montana, I wanted to upgrade my trout gear.
For me, this meant going "vintage", not "latest/greatest"  ;D
I picked up this sweet little Shakespeare 2052 on ebay for a steal.  It was already in nice shape so I just did a basic service.
These reels have a very basic, but bullet proof design.
Also love to see "Made in the USA"!

I'll be mounting it on this classic Sabre ultra light rod that I found.

Should be a killer combo!
