Shot for the Stars, Slid in a Ditch... (1/26)
« on: January 26, 2016, 05:45:24 PM »
Man, it was a "High Hopes" type of day today.  Weather was great... Boat was purring and we made a B-Line in the dark to the yellowtail grounds to see if anything was biting.  We got there to see one boat hooked up, but not sure if they got it to gaff or not since the minute we looked away and back, they were putting the gaff away... but it looked like they lost it.

We made the first drift with some great marks on the meter, but tried to make another run and had a hell of a time restarting the boat.  I decided to keep it running the entire time we were out there to lower the chances of having to call Seatow.  We stayed away from the crowd as not to scare anything away with the running motor, but it looked like nothing was happening and the boats slowly started to bail and head to new areas.  Steve and I headed over and caught about 100 mackerel for live bait and shark bait.  6 at a time was pretty much the going rate of bait macks per cast.

We decided we needed some game fish and decided to try for bass and butts.  I wasn't liking how the motor was running, so figured to get closer to the inlet as possible.
Man, the bass were biting the plastic very good!  We had a swarm of 30 calico bass chase Steve's swimmy from the surface.  I don't think I ever seen so many calico bass swarm like that on one lure!

There were no butts to be found, but we continued hitting the legal bass.  Nothing huge, but all in the 14 to 17 inch range.

Steve had a great stretch there for a bit!

The calicos turned into all turd rollers.

Then we decided to hit one more place before heading back to the barn.  On the way I heard a bad sound coming from the motor and BOOM!  The damn flywheel was so hot I couldn't touch it and it wouldn't turn.  Motor Blown....  I just got that damn motor and put some serious time in it to make sure it was in tip top shape... all for naught.  Time to figure out plan B as I don't have any money to replace it, so need to get creative or just go without a boat... ugh....

So glad I renewed my Vessel Assist last week....

So bummed the Boma is down for the count....

Hoping it is minor but what you describes sounds pretty ominous. I know you have had massive motor headaches this year.

Yeah, the motor has been the biggest head ache, but the last year has been really tough.  I also use a boat a lot more than your average angler so I rack up the miles on the hull and hours on the motor like no ones business.

Unfortunately, I have no money to use towards the boat this year as I have some trips back east to do and house repairs to make. Maybe something will come along that will work out, but in the meantime, I'm going to be pounding some shoreline!  No break for the fishies if I can help it.   8)

Reviewing my options and not sure what to do.  It would be a different story if I had $$$ to remedy the situation, but I know the B.O.A.T drill.

Have you taken a peek at how bad the damage may be to the engine or just going to stick a fork in it?
