Catfish PB 4/9
« on: April 10, 2016, 09:16:56 AM »
gf and I made another trip to the catfish place.

We got there early with plenty of daylight and we went for a walk and scoped out some new spots ive been eye balling via google earth.

One spot in particular had a fairly steep slope heading to deep water. Really thought this place was flat on the bottom all around considering that's all ive seen from all the other spots ive fished. The spot is one you wanna be a bit low key so we finished our walk and headed to the main spot.

set up an hour before dark and started tossing some fly lined maks out.

picked up a 7.2lb kitty (not pictured).

Then got this 13.9lb cat

Back in the water it went of course.

It was now 10pm and we packed up and drove over the new spot to give it a shot.

I casted one mak close and one out far to see which had better results.

A couple bass smacked some bugs off the surface making a pretty decent splash. Never even seen that here so im taking that as a good sign of the new spot. Will be targeting them here as well next time. Recently saw some pictures of bass caught out of here pushing double digits as well.

The bait that got chucked deep got picked up. It just cruised with the bait slowly and didn't feel like much till I put some pressure on it and took off :) This was one long and fun fight. When I thought it was done it would just take off again and peel off more line. At one point it was swimming practically straight down which again confirmed I was fishing a deep spot. Finally got it to the surface, this time no slope to slide it up and didn't have my net with me. Handed the rod off to my gf and lippped it. Nice fish and a new PB

weighed in at 14.9lbs

On the lighter new citica/st croix set up too

It had someone elses hook in its mouth too with broke off 6lb mono attached. Went ahead and removed that one as well.  :)

I wanted to re cast in the same spot but the gf wanted to go. Only got to fish it for 10 min. Cant wait to fish it again, really confident about this spot. Think this is where I'm gona find the 30lb plus cats and hawg bass :)

30 would be a feat and a half, but if it's in there I have no doubt you will catch it.
Bravo on that new PB!
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Wow Eric, that's one fat cat there. Been a long time since I caught any catfish. That certainly looks like a fun time.

Thanks guys.

I'm still stoked about those catches, was thinking about it through out the day at work.

The 14 in a half pounder was fun as hell  :)

I'm gona catch the 20 plus kitty later this week.

Nice catfish. Never really tried for them. Toying with the idea lately though.

It's worth it if you know a place that holds sizable cats.

All you gotta do is throw a mak chunk on gear you already have.

Bass gear, tuna gear to long rods depending on what your targeting.

Channels grow to about 50 lbs, blues and flatheads will grow over 100 lbs.

They could be called freshwater grinners... I think the mindset and tactics used for big cats have many simalarities with those of shark fishing.
