Epic Fail 7/30/16
« on: July 30, 2016, 10:28:32 AM »
Set out this morning to do some light tackle surf fishing.

Jumped in the truck with spotfin in mind. No destination planned, just went where my truck took me.

Got to the beach at first light, grabbed some crabs and started walking and looking. Found a few likely spots and threw crabs at them for no love.

Finally I settled on one little hole that looked promising. Got a couple taps, the rod loaded up but nobody was home when I reeled in. Still it was a good sign and I stuck it out.

Not long after I scored a small, real small, corbina. Cool, the hole is holding fish and getting better as the tide comes in.

I kept scanning the skinny water as I fished and spotted three backs out of the water. Cast to where I thought they might go and got lucky. Decent 16 inch corbina.

Spent the next couple hours at that hole until the grass ran me off.

By that time I had 9 corbina, and a medium perch. The corbina had some size to them, just not a big size.

Watched an osprey swoop down from the cliff and just miss some fish I could see in the wave. Later a peregrine chased him off.

Scored a tenth corbina walking back to the truck to hit double digits.

Failed to even see a spotfin.

Epic fail indeed! Lol

You are already having a much better day than me. I would have loved to get out of the house this morning.

Crap... 10 beans are pretty damn good no matter what the size.
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Habit. Not like it's a secret spot.

I stopped too short then...  2 stinking small perch at TP this morning and tons of eel grass and micro crabs.

I know some of those guys posting on SC are DM peeps ... My buddy Matt went down on Sat morning and his boy caught a toad SFC, and they landed a half dozen corbs too. 20th st. Said they were everywhere. Novice surf fishermen too ... so imagine what our vets who stalk the morning skinny can do. Would walk the zone 18th -22nd if it were me ... just passing the 411 to help others here.

Funny - I always have surf fished there .. so think of it as "my spot" .. but it's not a secret and love getting people on fish. The low tide skinny water is some of the best in SD. Long flat outflow with fish tailing in the early AM ..
