Over The Hill (4/18)
« on: April 19, 2017, 06:09:59 AM »
Squatch and I had some Prehistoric Soul work to do and met up at the bar to conduct said work.  Having your conference room be a bar is something that I hope would really catch on in most of corporate america.  ;D

Afterwards, we headed down to the surf in hopes for a nice grinner before the swells kick up again later this week.  With Mike catching one yesterday at the Casino-ish spot, we decided to fish the Kitchen to see if anyone was home.  We had some company who stayed around until 8:30 when he had to make the drive back to LA.  15 minutes after he left, Squatch got to witness what usually happens to him when he leaves.  lol

I saw what looked like weeds on my line and was going to reel it in, when I put the rod in my hand and felt a few tugs.  I was thinking an eel, but stayed patient just in case.
I felt the line starting to taut and just swung for the fences.... Somebody was home!

Right away I knew it was the right kind!  Great fight in this girl as Squatch got his mits on her tail and slid her up the beach.  Great set of chompers on ger!

For her size, she was rather rotund.  A fat 80" female 7-gill.  Clean without a mark on her.

This 80" looks bigger than Mike's 92".  lol

Anyway, we fished until 10pm and called it quits.  By the time I got home and in bed, it was midnight.  4am wakeup call is brutal when getting to bed so late, but it's worth it when you hit a big mark, like Over the Hill big number.... 40!  Only 10 more to get to a big landmark of the half-century club!

Thanks for reading and until next tide!

Business meeting in the bar and a Grinner on the sand, maybe the bar atmosphere is the hot ticket for a productive evening ;D

Pretty funny to see the "bite before I get to the freeway" happen to someone else.

Damn, Taylor and I were going to go there yesterday but the top ring on the rod I brought is cracked and I couldn't make it back home to get another one. We'll be there tonight though.
Keep it tight

Nice fresh one for sure!...
If your "swinging for the fences' your certainly not using circle hooks but it looks like that hook caught in the corner of her mouth better than any circle would...Is that typical of your hook-sets on 7's Tom?

The offset octopus hooks (at least for me) always seems to catch the corner of the mouth.  I also set the hook soon as I feel the line loading up to prevent them from swallowing it.  Hard to really tell what is going on without visually seeing the bait and hook being taken but I've been fairly consistent with these results so I feel pretty confident that is what is happening.

I'll second that. I can recall maybe two Sharks we were unable to pull the hook using the octopus hooks.

It does look bigger than the one I caught. Damn camera angles. My pics absolutely didn't do any justice to the one I caught. I have more pics I could post on the one I caught to give a better look at it's size, but then it'd totally give away the spot. Nice catch! How were the conditions there? Surf tolerable?

Totally fishable.  I did get one 300# kelp monster, but otherwise it was fairly weed free.

Good news! So tempted to fish tonight, but getting my butt kicked by a cold.

Nice! Now seems like a good time to get out! I agree on the octopus, that most recent one I had to cut off since I didn't come equipped with something to dislodge it from it's upper mouth area without risking my hand, but the second one was right in the corner. If you are tentative and don't let the fish swallow and take off but wait for the right bite and lay into it it usually is easily retrievable. It also makes you lose a few fish due to miscalculating the bite sometimes, but it's part of the fun for me to lay that steel in with all that force! Congrats on 40 Tom! We will never catch up :(!
