Notorynchus cepedianus (5/2)
« on: May 03, 2017, 06:15:23 AM »
Last Tuesday I couldn't make it down fishing and this Tuesday looked to be the same.  My wife has a hell job and I've been on kid duty for what seems to be months now.  I barely have even got my new boat out of my driveway and into the ocean.

I was free after 6pm and met up with Steve at the spot.  Tons of surfers and not one looked afraid of sharks as they surfed even in the darkness.  Finally the last surfers got out of the water and we got our lines in.  Steve almost instantly got a bass bite but farmed it.  I followed suit...

About an hour into the session, I see my rod dip.  I wait and set the hook.  Fish on!  Or was it a fish?  I felt big bumps in the line, but it was fighting back.  Soon after I pull up a big kelp stringer and was fooled.

30 minutes later and I see a bump in my line.  I get the rod in my hands and the line drops.  I was thinking more weeds, but reeled in the slack until the line tightened and pulled a Roland Martin on the hook set.  Bam!   This time someone was home!!!!!!

Finally got her in, all 91" of her!  It felt good getting the first grinner of May and #41 in the PS books!

Steve goes to me "She's barely hooked and he wasn't kidding.  I just touched the hook with my pliers and the hook popped out.  I got pretty lucky there, but I'll take it!

Steve then spies someone in the distance and makes the call to go into radio silence.  No headlamps from this point forward.
We did really good by working in moonlight and called last cast.  It was getting late and the 4am wake up call is unbearable these days.

Just then I hear a screaming rip of the reel and it wasn't mine!  Steve was hooked up but it didn't look too big at first.  Not much bend in the rod or fight until it's belly hit the sand and it went ripping out!  Now we had to use the head lamps so the jig was up, but I was not handling a 7-gill in the dark!  It got much bigger from the beginning of the fight!

Finally, #2 on the beach!  86" Engorged Male!

As we were sliding it back to Steve's sand spike it puked up a nasty fish.  After an investigation it turned out to be a moray eel!  I took a picture but photobucket screwed me and didn't download it last night, so I will get a pic up this afternoon when I get home.

That was it!  Anytime when two sharks hit the sand, it's a great night.  Especially when you both get one!

First Quarter Moon - 1' to 3' surf - (2) Sevengills.  91" Female and 86" Male - Mackerel - Outgoing Tide

Time to update the shark list now there are 3 in the Que.

Thanks for reading and until next tide!

You got lucky? Think I was the lucky one on your fish. Had to let that thing go a couple times before I could land it. If that hook popped you never would have believed it wasn't on purpose. Even after that tail slap that came too close to the nuts.

Steve, I would have "accidentally" let Tom's fish go if it tried to hit me in the nuts. (If you aren't cheating then you aren't trying.)  ;)

Problem with that is I want him to land the fish that puts me ahead of him on the list. I would be as pissed at myself if it got away as he would be pissed at me for letting it happen. Grumpy Tom is no fun.

Steve got one to pose with its mouth open (PS front page), how cool is that!

I found the eel carcass from Steve's shark.  Pretty much digested already.

Gnarly! I'm guessing there's gonna be a surge in eel baits when one gets caught. Been a long while since I've caught one. Tried sandbass for bait last night. Conditions made it impossible to judge if it'd work or not. Should've stayed home.
