Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda (28Jan2018)
« on: January 28, 2018, 08:00:46 PM »
Solo sesh to check on conditions and see if the higher tides would draw in the grinners. On the sand by 3am.

It was cold and surf wasnít pumping, but the water was rough and confused. Sent out some macks and the waiting game commenced. Had one rod rigged with a 3way and the other had a fish finder rig. The fish finder rig didnít too well in the rough water. Came back tangled every time. Decided to retire that rod and focus on one. After nearly an hour of absolutely nothing, the reel screams and itís game on! Sure has been a while!! Lots of zig zagging and a couple of breaches. Wasnít a long fight, but it was bulldogging the entire time. At this point Iíve clearly IDíd it as soupie, but knew the real battle was getting it beached as there was a deep trough about 10yds out that was creating some serious shore break. I get it past the trough, but one of the few legit 5í waves that was predicted rolls in and tosses the soupie. Main line breaks from the impact and the soupie gets sucked back into the trough and that was all she wrote.

Shoulda had my first grinner for 2018. Woulda been sweet to have a sand hand. This coulda been a much better report. Well, I got to tangle with one finally! Hoping it shows again this Thursday!! So tired..

Bummer about the break off, but I'm stoked you got to tangle with one.  BTW, it's nice to see I'm not the only one up at 3:00 in the morning   ;D

Well, that at least saves me time from starting the 2018 list.  I'll have to get the first grinner of the list before starting it.  LOL

Bummer on the lost soupie.  I almost can't even remember the last one I beached.

Actually there's over a dozen grinners that have been caught in 2018 already... ;D

3:00am?

The most un-enjoyable part! I am not a morning person.

Sorry to hear about the lost soupie, but glad to hear they are within casting distance again.

Is 3:00am really late or really early? Man, that would F up my sleep schedule. I'd be needing an old man nap for sure ;D

I am a morning person and I'm closer to getting up at 3:00am than ever going to bed at 3:00am!!!

Yeah, but "on the sand" by 3am means getting up/ready at 2am :o

Maybe if I was camping on the sand, ok, but other than that, I'm just not going to do it ;D
