Is it considered bycatch when you're actually targeting bycatch?  ;D :P

OK, The June Contest is here!!!!!

Couple of questions about -Shoreline based caught only.  Rod has to be affixed into a sand spike on the beach or bay shoreline.  No pier sharks/rays.

1. Does this mean yakked baits are allowed or is it hand cast only?

2. Does the sand spike have to actually be in sand? We have a spot that has a wooden deck and a rock retaining wall that run parallel to the water. You gain no casting or distance advantage fishing from them, getting to the sand is safe and easy, and you have to land the fish on the sand. We fish from those vantage points because it lets us get more of our lines out of the water/salad and makes it much easier for people walking along the beach to walk under the lines because it's a pretty narrow strip of beach. It's not like you're fishing from a rock jetty.

;D

1. Does this mean yakked baits are allowed or is it hand cast only? Yes any method to get a bait out there, as long as they are a legal species you are targeting.  A non-legal species like a BSB or any other protected species by the DFW rules would be classified as Bycatch for this contest

It's not like you're fishing from a rock jetty. You are good like that.  This is to make sure that the quarry could be released unharmed so that doesn't effect meaning of the rule.

So this basically would mean bait only, nothing caught on lures allowed?...unless your reteiving a swimbait while the rod is in a holder?

First off, that's a really nice surf ghost Joe! Congrats brother!

Secondly, rules are amended even though everyone knows what I mean by "Bycatch" .

No Lures, Small Rods... only fish caught accidentally on bait on the LONG ROD while shark or ray fishing.
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Bycatch is referring to the smaller stuff on the long rod that you are not intending to catch or not looking to catch.  Using a small rod would not qualify that as Bycatch, but as targeted fish since you are scaling the gear back and using artificial lures to catch game fish (fin fish) rather than sharks or rays.

Nobody has been out searching?  I know tides are not right, but I'd figure someone would have something to add in the first week of June!

We've been trying boss, but it seems like you can only hand cast from shore for 10 to 15 minute intervals at low tide. Once the tide starts coming in, so do the kelp monsters. I've talked to a fair number of guys up and down the coast and it's been pretty much the same story.

That's really what I was figuring, but June is usually a really good month and things have been super slow.  The current and constant Southerly wind has not helped out either.

Keep at it Chip!

Conditions were stellar last night with ankle slappers and little to no salad, no grinners. At least where I fished.
