Catfish Opener 5/25/18
« on: May 28, 2018, 07:23:32 AM »
Little bit late, but its a busy weekend.

Suffered through almost a whole day at work, finished what needed to be done and boss let me cut out an hour early.

Supposed to meet Tom at the lake, figured the extra hour would give me time to get my gear ready before he showed up. Figured I would pick up his permit and the boat launch and be ready when he got there. Something told me to check the parking lot, and there was his truck and trailer, empty. SOB was already on the lake.

Called him in and found out he had already lost a nice bass. Underspin works in freshwater.

So we cruised around the lake trying to find an early catfish bite. We tried shallow and deep in several areas for nothing. Finally we decided to set up in one spot and stick it out.

It was tucked in out of the wind so it was a pretty pleasant afternoon.

After soaking bait for a couple hours maybe, Tom starts getting bit. He ends up with three in short order, then the flurry ends. Meanwhile I am wearing the stripe.

Tom gets a fourth, and I'm sitting there like all WTF, and finally get bit. Then I get a couple more to narrow the gap. I'm feeling a lot better now.

Tom gets another, then I rally with two to tie it up.

After that we go back and forth a couple times, then Tom's bite just slows to a crawl, and I can't real a bait in without a fish. Even had a double on once. On fish swam into the structure and got hung up, I switched to the other rod, reeled in, and landed the fsecond fish. In the meantime the first had swam free and I landed it as well.

It was a super fun night on the lake til midnight.

Tom said the fish went 2-4 pounds, so not bad.

Good times, but I was tired on Saturday.

2.40 pounds to 4.11 pounds.  The 4.11 pounder was loaded with eggs.

I found some Zebra Mussels which is not good.

All the cats were quality and averages over 3 pounds.  Probably our best 10 catfish limit doing this night fishing thing yet.

Super bummed I lost my first cast bass.  It was a dock bass and I didn't have enough drag to keep him from swimming under the docks and busting me off.

Oh, thanks Squatch for typing this up.  I've been meaning to do it today, so was very happy to see it already done.
