Turtles are vermin and overloaded rods
« on: June 25, 2018, 06:35:53 AM »
Turtles were thieving bait like there was no tomorrow. Stopped off to examine potential rabbit hunting areas and found boatloads of foxholes.

Border Patrol as is normal out there stops to see what I'm doing. Kinda nice since it was 106 and I'm stopped wandering in the desert.

Off to the fishing areas and right off the bat turtles peck the bait to death. Tried a drift rig which is a bit trickier to cast.

Moved to what is a normally productive canal and more turtle bites.

Ended up in the AAC far east and needed more weight due to the current but the rod was then too overloaded and when swinging for the fence there is this loss of tension near the top of the arc and then the line reconnects with the reel and causes an instant backlash and the weight breaks the line.

Tough night for one fish. Usually is gangbusters.

Are they softshells or sliders?

You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Softshells. Smaller version of this. They seem to be infesting the Westside main.

One of the multitude of foxholes which may be burrowing owls, kit foxes, or coyotes.

Tempted to take a game camera out there, set up a waterhole and some rabbit food to see what activity happens while fishing.

Crawl in head first with a head lamp, so you get to see what it is first hand! Use a GoPro also so we can see what you see. Hahaha
