Tackle Talk / Lever vs. Star Drags
« on: May 26, 2016, 01:44:27 PM »
Hey guys,
Been looking at options for upgrading to a conventional set up. (scouring the classifieds and craigslist for used stuff)
I've come across several lever drag reels and I want to know the reasons for the different styles.
The main reason I'm interested is because I've seen several lever drags in left hand configurations and zero star drag ones.
SO, what is the reasoning behind them and what are the pros/cons for using them the way we do in the surf?

Thank you!

Amazing session!
Careful hoisting those grinners over your head, you don't want your back to put you on time out!

I like this idea!
What if we stickied this thread and posted all the "face" pics here?

Tackle Talk / Re: Tapered Shock Leader
« on: May 23, 2016, 09:34:33 PM »
Wow, never heard of a tapered leader in that heavy of line before, sounds beafy.
The idea of matching the tapered end to your main line is really cool. I'm looking forward to seeing how that works out. I run a 100 yard top shot of 40lb big game mono and an 80lb shock leader. I've been tying a spider hitch in the 40 and then tying the shock leader to that loop with a bristol knot. Both knots are fairly low profile and separated by a couple inches. Plus the 40lb is doubled where the shock leader ties in. I haven't had any issues casting it,  but I can feel it come through the guides when reeling it in.

Nice solo surf bat!
It's always fun to have an audience, but makes it more nerve wracking too LOL!
I pulled in a 12" smelt on a 12/0 circle once, didn't even know he was there. Serves those little bait stealers right!

Look at all that salad washed up on the sand. How was it out in the soaking zone, salad free? Did you stay until the tide peaked after sunset? Damn, looking at the surf forecast & how sunset and the peak high are lined up over the next few days is the Magic Hour recipe. Can't see myself letting that pass by without having a bait out either...
JOE

Joe,
There was a bit of salad on the sand, but nothing in the water.  I thought it would be a great night with the great conditions, but not a bite.
Let me know if you decide to come out, I may try to join you.

Well after my last session catching my first sevengill (and new PB of anything!) I naturally assumed that I would be catching beasts every outing now, Haha.
Dad and I hit the sand again last night for a few hours and went through 3 big macs for one big skunk.
Conditions were great, but no one was home.  We had a nice, relaxing evening though  :)
A couple of pics just for fun.

Next time...

We're hoping to get out of our rental and buy something in the next few months.
One of my goals is to start a garden then.  Just a couple things at first to get my feet wet.
I'd also like to have a few trees.  Avocado, orange, lemon, apricot???
Any suggestions?
