General Board / 2017 MLB Draft
« on: June 14, 2017, 11:02:55 PM »
So, its hard to put in context what a roller coaster ride this has been. The past 6 months has been questionairre after questionnaire, interview after interview and it all came down to Monday's draft. We got the call the Mets wanted to take Alika in the 2nd round, 59th pick overall, for a sh!t ton of money. We worked the scenario for weeks and weeks prior but wow what a hard decision. Opted for college, he's going to ASU but man what depression has followed like 'did we make the right choice?'.  Got so many supportive messages from friends and scouts that it was the right choice. Today, the Yankees took him in the 32nd round. No questions just congrats you deserved to have "drafted by the Yankees" on your resume. It took a while to register, but no matter what happens in life, if he never plays ball again, he can forever say he was drafted by the Yankees. Pretty cool consolation from that organization, but we'll do it all again in 3 years!!!

Thanks for reading, and thanks for letting me share this with the tight gang here. Appreciate all your kind words.

Aloha to all my friends here!

Dave

« on: April 15, 2017, 09:41:41 PM »
Been working hard and it's starting to pay off. Son was featured on FoxSports San Diego. Pretty stoked for him though he'll say "dad, you're a kook for being excited about this stuff". But what the hell ... life is short.

Proud pops .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJLMGgHRw8A

Team is currently ranked 8th in the Nation, and 4th in CA. Crazy sheet ...

I'm really tripping he's a senior. Jeez that went quick.

Food & Recipe / Easy Chicken Adobo
« on: March 23, 2017, 11:30:26 PM »
I use the party pack from Ralphs - half drumstick half thighs.

In a cooking pot (spaghetti type) I add all the chicken, Soy Sauce, white vinegar equal parts about 1 1/2 cup each (I use asian white vinegar it's lower acid) then add water till it covers the chicken
Add pepper corns (generous), bay leaves, lots of garlic, and I use brown sugar (maybe half cup?), with some Cayenne pepper

Stir and set in fridge for 2-3 hours.

Place on stove and bring to boil and cook 15 min. Reduce heat to simmer for another 30min.

Plate with rice and whatever veggies you like. I do broccoli and carrots. Sauce may be used on rice too. Some people like to reduce the sauce further when chicken is removed.

SUPER EASY! Enjoy!

Aloha!

Food & Recipe / Terry Salmon, garlic mash, asparagus
« on: March 23, 2017, 11:19:16 PM »
Buy a nice filet cut into serving size skin off

Salt / pepper each serving place into skillet with EVO and butter
Light sear (color) each side.
Place on baking sheet and coat with Panda Express mandarin teriyaki sauce (recently started using this - so ONO!)
400degree oven to finish for about 7-8 minutes depending on thickness.

Peel and cube potatoes into pot of cold water
Add Salt and diced garlic (I like to add a lot)
Boil till soft, drain, mash with fork
Add butter, half container cream cheese w/chives, and milk
Whisk until smooth (I have one of those boat motors with a whisk attachment so I whip till creamy
Add garlic salt to taste as you whip. Creaminess depends on how much milk or half half you add.

Asparagus mix in bowl with salt pepper and EVO.
Skillet with EVO and toss frequently. I like to add sugar and soy sauce to taste, just to make a little sweet
Asparagus is ready when it just turns dark green but still has a 'snap' to it when you bite. Don't let it get soggy.

Plate and enjoy. 20 min meal tops.

SUPER EASY Aloha!

Great event again - thanks Tom for keeping this going year after year.  8) 8)

Little disappointed with the amount of alcohol I brought home, but Joel put a good dent in the sky bottle.  :P :P

Happy sharking days ahead.

General Board / Potential El Nino again?
« on: February 16, 2017, 05:25:42 PM »
Can we really go back-to-back-to-back?? 2015 the insane tuna, Marlin, Ono fishing ... 2016 the massive BlueFin being caught. What would a third term warm trend look like?
OMG I need to get my boat fixed.

Some things I've read recently: (source - weather underground blogs)

Today's update from the Aussies (2/16/17)

Increased chance of El Niņo by spring

The El Niņo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently neutral. International models suggest this is likely to continue through the southern autumn. All but one model indicates a steady warming in the central tropical Pacific Ocean over the next six months. Five models suggest El Niņo thresholds may be reached by July 2017; however, model accuracy at this time of year is generally low. Therefore ENSO-neutral and El Niņo are, at this stage, considered possible, with La Niņa very unlikely for the second half of 2017.

[StormTrackerScott]
Unfortunately our records only go back to 1880 but this is for sure uncharted territory. The fact that we had a Super El-Nino in early 2016 switched to weak La-Nina and now to El-Nino in 2017 is crazy!

I mean 1C across Nino 3.4 by late March into April already folks that's near Moderate El-Nino strength in just a matter of weeks from now.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Kitchen 2/15/17
« on: February 15, 2017, 10:38:43 PM »
Conditions before the storms roll in were too good to pass up. Decided to hit the soup kitchen solo for a few hours.
Made bait at the Korean market and got there about 645p. Surf was 1-3 with incoming tide. A few kelp snags but nothing to complain about.

About my fourth or fifth bait the rod loads then gives, as if the weight came free. Figured it was kelp but then started doing the 7gill dance.
Waited for the zzzzpull and set the hook. Nice little fight. Was happy.

As I'm walking the shark up the beach I noticed a few headlights coming my way. The red lamp was a dead giveaway (Binh) ... talk about great timing.
Had the 7 in the corner of the mouth, and Binh was kind enough to deal with the business end for me. (THANKS!)

Swam off just fine.

Only got a few pics but left smiling. Mike got a hit soon after - but will let him tell that story.

Binh with the assist.

Hope you guys got into more after I left!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Target species acquired zzzzzzzzzzip
« on: February 12, 2017, 11:31:31 PM »
Hit the fish off AO with Paul tonight to see what was lurking around. Had a kick as fire going but only a few bouncing rods.

Missed two good zips, then I land a shovel on the third. Paul finally acquires said target species. Bat Ray!

It was actually too small for a photo op. But 10" max is my guess. Looks like the girls dropped early this year (uh oh).

Fire was nice and avoided skunk. Cool moonrise as well.

Little worried about the 7-peat ...

General Board / Rain! Thank GOD
« on: January 20, 2017, 05:05:18 PM »
Man what a wash today in Rancho Bernardo! Must of had 2"+ in just the last hour alone! Can't wait to see these SoCal reservoir volumes grow - Barrett especially.

Big brother to todays storm is supposed to hit Sun/Mon. Be safe out there.

Any bets the water companies WON'T decrease rates now that the drought has had some help?

Used to do this when I was a kid. Next generation keeping the faith! My oldest golf course storm surfing!

General Board / Really? WTF? ...
« on: January 13, 2017, 01:11:06 PM »
Really?

What the hell is this? No wonder the reel ceased and looked like there was a bent spool.

Epic first cast curse with a bare hook LEO. LOL ... Anyone have this happen before?

Ugh - $40 replacement in the mail.

Can't post pics yet, but here's the story.

Late start around 6:30pm. Conditions were amazing. No wind, low surf, and NO WEEDS!!!! Every cast held perfectly.

Missed a good hit around 8:30, then got one to stick around 9:30. Boy she was full of life and made several nice runs. Even came up on the beach with a little attitude after a good long fight.

Took some pics, gave a quick measure and off she went.

That was it for the night. Gave it till 11p and left with the rain.

details:
63" female, low-incoming tide, Mack center cut piece, moon phase - last quarter

Aloha!
and Happy Holidays!

Edit - trying new photo hosting .. (AH ... HECK YEAH!!)
