The Usual 05/11
« on: May 13, 2016, 08:23:56 AM »
Pat, our friend Tom, and I hit the surf yesterday because the forecast just looked too sweet. Got out around 5PM and even though there was calm surf there was a lot of chopped salad. Fishable but definitely an annoyance. I got the first hit around 6:30, but the silly shark took my sputnik and not the bait. My leader to the sputnik was cut clean, but it  was definitely a takedown on my rod lol. About 30 mins later Tom got hit, his cast was literally in probably 3ft of water or less. A feisty 81" female.

We had a fire going on this night as well, which was real nice, but probably made us miss some hits while tending to it. But Pat managed to catch his rod bouncing and brought in a 83" male.

We called it a night at 10PM. I was glad Tom got one, and was OK with Pat getting one  ::). I'll be back for my special needs sputnik eater lol.

Right on Adam, too bad about the lead eater LOL!
Is it legal to have a fire on the beach?  I'd love to next time out.

Roger that.  We have lost many a fish tending to the fire, but also stayed warm and enjoyed the flames between bites.

Nicely done guys!
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Not legal there Chad, but as they say, it's only illegal if you get caught. If you kept it small and up in the rocks out of view from where the law would roll up at and have a bucket filled with water close by to dowse it if needed, we'd probably be ok., might want to go a few hundred yards further north too.

Nice going guys 8)

The fire is illegal but:

Is it controlled and done in a safe manner?

Is it a group of guys having good honest fun?

Law enforcement takes these things into consideration and don't just issue citations to everyone they come across.

Keep doing what your doing and enjoy 8)

I have a wash machine tub. Never been hassled for a fire. Problem with ground fires is they can still be hot in the morning.

I asked my buddy who's ex-Ventura county sheriff. He said the same as Eric. If you're being responsible and cool you won't get hassled.  8)

Well we saw no notification posted. I found this great pic on Tom's girlfriends FB. This is as big as it got and we kept the smoke down. A easy sand snuff.

FWIW On a similiar note, they sure dont make it apparent by posting any signs but technically all beaches that are in the non-incorporated areas of Ventura County close at 10:30pm. The Sheriff usually dosn't pull through this place till 12-1am, Ive found by staying till then a couple of nights. But same thing ,since I was just fishing, they didnt ticket me, just gave me a warning and told me what the law was and said I shouldnt be parked where I was after 10:30 either. I asked where that was posted on a sign and they couldnt but I left as they asked me to as I thought it best to save that battle for another day...
