Well, even in the depths of January, the local yellowtail bit is still going on. The bite is hot one day and cold the next, but the fish have all been quality and ranged from 18-30 pounds. The local islands are seeing huge numbers of them and lots of fish are being caught. They are not the bigger models (5-12 lbs) with some occasional larger models (18-22 lbs)in the mix.
Most of these fish have been deep fish and caught on the heavy Yo-Yo iron or dropper loop, but there have been decent catches on the surface iron when the schools have chased all the bait up to the surface. The belly’s have been full of everything. Tuna Crab, Rockfish, Mackerel, Sardine and even some bass have been pulled out of their bellies when cleaning the fish.
Hopefully this good fishing extends into the spring and continues into the remainder of 2015!
