Well, the great local bank bite on Wahoo continues up and down the SoCal bight. Record numbers are also being reported from the private fleet and fishing landings as one of the local boats whacked 28 wahoo for 10 people!
These fish are as close in as 8 miles and are mostly trolled fish on marauders and other deeper trolled lures. Some have been on bait, but the fish have been preferring the speedy trollers. Along with the ‘Hoo are an abundance of Blue Marlin with a reported grander hooked up on Friday that was cut off on the boats swim step after a lengthy battle and numerous Blue’s in the 250-500 pound range.
Not to be left out, but the inshore yellowtail bite has also been hot with the average fish ranging from 20-30 pounds. Delmar has been the hot spot with the biggest biomass, but they have been reported from all beaches up and down the coast in as shallow as 20 feet of water!
This is an El Nino has been producing some of the best fishing the South Land has seen in almost a century and will hopefully continue into 2016 as long as the monster waves and swell don’t keep all the boats at dock. Maybe then we will see what exotics have cruised into the Harbors as more people fish the bay to get their fix. In the meantime, be sure to get out there and strike while the iron is hot! Stuff like this may only be around once in our lifetime and make the most out of it.
Until next tide…
