Well, there has been a few anglers taking advantage of this warm water and fishing the local SoCal waters for the crazy exotic fish we have been seeing all year and super close to home! There have been Wahoo less than 8 miles from the San Diego Coast as well Marlin running as close as the 9-mile bank and some reported to have been even closer! In years past, the El Nino usually causes the inshore scene to die out while bringing in many exotics pelagics, but not this year. Bullet Tuna, Skip Jack, Opah and an abundance of Yellowtail are filling in the inshore scene. Many giant yellows to 50 pounds are being caught in water 20 feet or less!
The biggest and most incredible catch to date was made by local San Diego angler, Kevin Mattson. He has been taking his 1987 Ranger “Glitter” Boat offshore catching numerous tuna, dorado and yellowtail, but has been putting his time in looking for a Bass Boat Marlin! Well, late last week, he accomplished his goal with a 315 pound Blue Marlin that he hooked and caught in the dark… all solo. Just any one of those reasons by their selves is quite the accomplishment, but he did it Old Man of the Sea style.
Mad props Kevin and way to accomplish a goal only many of us would dream about the night before a fishing trip!
