Every once in a while we hook something that we were not expecting and quickly realize we do not have the proper gear to battle the beast. Sometimes the cards fall our favor and we land that beast even when odds were very small in doing so. Small bass gear with 10 pound monofilament and a connector knot to a small 12″ leader is usually not something you want to be using when an extremely large bat ray is hooked. When it does happens though, do you break off to keep from getting spooled? Or do you release your inner Chi on that little reel and hope the planets align to emerge victorious? That’s the dilemma which crossed my mind within the first second of hooking the beastly bat ray and I chose wisely.
